BEGINNING SKIING

The club offers a variety of ski programs designed to meet all skiers’ needs, from early development to advanced technical training. The club also offers recreational ski activities. Ski programs are offered at the ski areas on Mount Hood and are organized by the Ski Committee and outdoor department. The Outdoor Activities Program organizes other skiing-related events.

My MAC Experience By Dorte Morse

On a wet, cold fall evening five years ago, my husband, Greg, came back from an outdoor-themed Family Fridays night at MAC. He had had a lengthy conversation with a fellow MAC member who was promoting the MAC ski team.

Greg suggested to me that we sign up our three kids for the season, even though neither he nor I had experience with skiing of any kind. At the time I didn’t even know you could participate in a MAC program outside of the club.

The weekend before Christmas we showed up at Mt. Hood Meadows with our three kids ready to go, and the two of us full of questions and wonder. We must have looked totally confused and helpless, but we were met by the most incredible and far more experienced parents ready to give us advice and help us out.

That was our first winter as a ski race family. Little did I know that we would end up buying an SUV, a rustic mountain cabin in Government Camp, and closets full of ski gear in all different sizes.

As I look back on the last five years I see that participating with MAC’s ski program has provided opportunities to gain skills, make new friends, and enjoy being in the outdoors. Being on the mountain, surrounded by beauty, skiing, sledding and socializing is

a delightful break from the routine of school, work and city life.

MAC’s experienced coaches make skiing fun and are very skilled at teaching racing technique. The MAC ski race program has something for everyone, from my five-year-old son who is joining the Mini Mite program to learn the basics, to elite racers who are among the top racers in the region. There is also a program for adults to ski together while their kids train. The program is geared at improving all-mountain skiing. There are also master racers who compete at the regional and national level. Come find out, as our family did, what great fun it is to be part of the MAC ski

program.

Dorte and Greg Morse have four children: Eli, age 16; Helena, age 14; Camilla, age 8; and Sebastian, age 5.

A complete list of programs and upcoming dates can be found in the winter class guide, which is in this month’s issue of The Winged M.
