Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue (LSSTLAR)
Dougie is a very typical Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue dog. Brought into the rescue after being hit by a car, Dougie had a smashed pelvis, broken leg and a huge rip in his diaphragm. The rip allowed his intestines to move up into his chest collapsing his lung. He was on the verge of suffocating when he was rushed to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists for immediate surgery. A week later, after he stabilized from that ordeal, he went into surgery again, this time to repair his broken pelvis and leg. Three months later, Dougie was repaired and almost back to normal thanks to the wonderful volunteers and donors that support the rescue. You can watch videos of his progress on Youtube at www.

Lone Star started in December of 1999 when the founder, Teresa Osborn, was asked to foster two little homeless lhasa apsos for ONE single week over the Christmas holiday. One of the little ones, Ginger, was pregnant and whelped seven adorable little puppies on Christmas Eve. Ginger, her cohort, Snap, and two of the puppies never left Teresa’s house and were the inspiration for the rescue. The rest is history.
Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue is a Houston based rescue organization that is “staffed” entirely by volunteers who have spent as many as 50,000 hours a year of their “spare” time for no reward other than to see a spark of life come back into the eyes of a neglected little dog. Since inception in 1999, LSSTLAR has rescued and adopted out over 1500 little fluffy shih tzu and lhasa apsos.
Lone Star is well known throughout the local rescue community as well as in national shih tzu and lhasa apso rescue circles as a group that takes in the “hard cases.” It is not uncommon for Lone Star to take in dogs needing orthopedic surgery, heartworm treatment and other complicated surgeries.
Dr. Michael Moore of Foster Creek Veterinary Hospital is their primary veterinar- ian and is relied upon many times a week to save the lives of sick and injured dogs. Without Dr. Moore, many of the dogs would never have made it. Lone Star also uses Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists on the 610 Loop in Houston for complicated surgeries and diagnostics.
The organization is a 501(c)(3) charity and is completely dependent on volun- tary donations from the public to help the little dogs in their care.
In today’s economy, Lone Star is completely overwhelmed with dogs being abandoned. They are in desperate need of foster homes and donations to help the little shih tzu and lhasas being rescued from local shelters and from owners no longer wanting their dogs.
