Slimdrive appeal for Scarlet Hotel
Cornwall’s luxury eco hotel, the Scarlet, is taking a contemporary, minimalist approach to the design of its reception, using glass walls and a sleek automatic sliding door operator from GEZE UK, to maximise the impact of its striking coastline view. Geze was asked to provide two operators that would blend seamlessly into the bright glass entrance lobby, and the unique Slimdrive SL was the ideal choice. Part of GEZE’s Slimdrive range, the durable SL operators are just 7cm high so could be fitted to the main entrance and the interior glass screen almost invisibly, creating a lobby. The Slimdrive SL has been designed and tested to meet the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including Building Bulletin 93, Approved Documents B and M, as well as assisting with the vigorous demands of the DDA. The entrances were also fitted with radar motion detectors and safety sensors, and the automatic doors can be easily programmed to provide a night mode for enhanced security and a permanently open option for busy check-in and check-out periods. In the hotel corridors, GEZE UK fitted TS 5000 rack and pinion door closers with electromechanical hold open e-guide rails. For further information telephone 01543 443000, email

ceiling to encourage wider use of libraries by young people. The system uses iColor Cove LED light fittings from Philips, managed via a ToBeTouched controller, which enables library staff to quickly select different lighting scenes. The project was part of a redesign of the library, which has created a space to encourage 14 to 25 year olds to use the library. Architects Croft Goode designed the ‘crib’ area and installed a translucent barasol stretched ceiling. This provided consulting engineers Beech Jackson Partnership (BJP) with an interesting challenge. Philips iColor Cove QLX compact, linear LED fixtures, able to generate saturated colour and dynamic effects, were selected for the lighting and installed behind the ceiling, using plug-in wiring for ease of installation. Control gear is housed in a remote cupboard for ease of access. For further information telephone 0845 6011283 or visit

Wall of light S
toakes Sytems has installed their Kalwall translucent wall on a company industrial building in Milton Keynes recently. The exceptionally long Kalwall and highly insulating cladding system from Stoakes Systems was chosen for several factors. It cleverly diffuses natural light into the building during the day and glows at night. The coloured LED lighting that is fitted within the wall features the colours of the company logo for that extra bit of branding. For further information visit

MADE OF TOUGHER STUFF
Tremco Illbruck has recently supplied their Rapide surfacing system in the basement car park of a luxury apartment building in the exclusive Pimlico area of London. The material was laid in severe weather conditions, during one of the coldest winters in many years, proving the strength and durability of the product. Available in a choice of colours, the
colour layer also provides a hardwearing waterproof layer that offers good slip resistance. For floors that experience extreme wear, there is a reinforced version, available for such places as ramps and other high traffic areas. For further information, visit
