The lodge which is now run independently by a sister company, HeartSWell Lodge Limited, is situated a few minutes’ walk from Derriford Hospital and provides high quality accommodation for families whilst their relatives are receiving hospital treatment.
The cardiac unit at Derriford Hospital serves patients from all over the South West region so as you can imagine the HeartSWell Lodge is seen as a blessing for the family and carers of those patients who travel to Plymouth for treatment. Although the lodge was originally built for relatives of cardiac patients, it now welcomes relatives and friends of any patients at Derriford, The Nuffield Hospital and Diving Diseases

Research Centre (DDRC). The lodge was opened in 2001 and readers of South West Building & Construction magazine might remember the construction project was featured in our publication at the time. The charity has two high-
profile Westcountry patrons - the broadcaster, Judi Spiers, and the celebrity chef, Peter Gorton. The current chairman and treasurer of the charity is
Clem Spencer from the Wood Yew Waste business. For more information on HeartSWell South West and its work, please contact Rachel Rainbird on 01752 315929 or email
rachel@heartswell.org.uk. The charity’s website is at
www.heartswell.org.uk. Rachel told South West Building & Construction magazine that the charity is fundraising for a 3D TOE
probe in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation (BHF). She said: ‘Together we need to raise in excess of £97,000. The 3D probe is a new non-invasive diagnostic tool which will have
a
tremendous impact on clinical decision making, resulting in more accurate prognosis for the patient. ‘Current 2D cardiac imaging has its limitations, viewing individual slices rather than providing complete views of the entire heart.
‘The difference between 2D and 3D can be compared to the transition from X-ray to Computed Tomography (CT).
‘The 3D images can be more easily understood by patients, giving them more information to be able to make educated choices about their treatment.’
