October 2010 South West Building & Construction 7
CONSTRUCTION SHOWCASE
Promoting the industry
NATIONAL Construction Week (NCW), which was staged in the autumn each year for several years, has been replaced by National Construction Showcase. The week was used by the industry to highlight the opportunities available in its various trades and professions. ConstructionSkills is now continuing this work through National Construction Showcase, an industry-wide scheme which
runs all year round. The initiative
gives
construction employers, schools and colleges the opportunity to showcase the careers and opportunities that are available in the industry.
National Construction
Showcase is all about promoting the modern construction industry and encouraging people to experience the world of construction.
Skydive aids hospice project
Article from Christine Chaplin of Cornish First Aid Supplies
ON September 11, Cornish First Aid Supplies along with 10 other local South West companies participated in the Children's Hospice South West Charity Skydive at Perranporth Airfield. The weather was glorious though a bit windy - extra precautions were taken so that none of the parachutists ended up the sea!
Our employee, Michael Chaplin, was chomping at the bit to throw himself out of an airplane at 10,000ft though first of all he had a lovely scenic flight of Cornwall down to St Ives, St Michael’s Mount and Falmouth.
The whole experience was mind-blowing for most people
and quite a few were completely speechless. Nevertheless they all wanted to do it again! If anyone would like to see the great video and photos from the day, please visit
www.lesw.co.uk /skydivechallenge2010. You never know, it might inspire you to take up the next challenge!
Altogether the 11 companies
raised over £5,000 to help build Little Harbour which will be Cornwall’s first children’s hospice.
The much-needed hospice at
St Austell will help bring the charity’s service nearer to families in Cornwall and Plymouth and provide more choice for families with children who are not expected to reach adulthood.
