Builders handover cutting edge complex
It is inside the building that the
benefits of the excellent design can be fully appreciated. The double-height glass-fronted lobby is an impressive entrance and is perhaps the best example of the feeling of light and space that has been created. A bold colour scheme of rich cherry red and vibrant lime green is accented by crisp white walls and sleek contemporary lines. The multi-functional auditorium acts as the hub of the new facility, boasting a spring-loaded dance floor, removable seating for 150 people, a professional lighting and sound system and a state-of- the-art projection screen. Given the nature of the 52-
week building project, which was funded by the Learning Skills Council (LSC), careful consideration was given by the building contractors to minimise noise disturbance and the environmental impacts of such a large development. Colin Ayres said: ‘We worked
very closely with both the client and the design team to keep disruption at the school to a minimum during the construction process. It was important also to get everyone feeling involved so at various intervals throughout the project Simon Lawrence gave guided tours to various groups from the headteacher to the pupils which they found very educational. It is all credit to the design and construction team that
the programme of works carried on unhindered during one of the worst winters for many years without any delays.’ Wherever possible local materials were used with elements such as the cedarwood cladding being sourced from Forestry Commission-approved suppliers. As a modern and forward-thinking development, environmental friendliness is built into the core of the building’s design with intelligent lighting systems and the highest standard of insulation to minimise heat loss. In addition to this, the building is equipped with facilities such as secure bicycle storage areas to encourage those living close enough to adopt a greener and healthier method of transport. Mark Richmond said: ‘As project manager and architects we were delighted to lead the collaborative process that has culminated in a fine building. The new sixth form building provides a distinctive and stimulating learning environment that is an enlightened and uplifting place to study. ‘The design conveys the
creative and forward-looking ethos that Huish Episcopi provides to students. This is a beacon of design and learning excellence for the young people of the area.’ For more information on RG Spiller, visit
