YEAR 12 students of Huish Episcopi Academy, a specialist college for Science, Languages and

Applied Learning in Langport, went back to school to a brand new cutting edge sixth form facility. Award-winning Chartered

building contractors RG Spiller Ltd, with offices in Chard, Amesbury and Exeter and extensive experience in the educational sector, handed over the £4.5m project in time for the autumn term.

Watson, who was a driving force behind the project, was joined by headteacher Graham Roff, project architect Julia Humphreys and Mark Richmond of Mark Richmond Architects (MRA), quantity surveyor Keith Snelling of Ridge Property Construction Consultants, and contracts manager Colin Ayres and site manager Simon Lawrence both of RG Spiller, to help lay the final brick. The first sixth form students entered the building for the first time on September 6 to be welcomed by a design that can only be described as spacious, vibrant and ultra-modern. ‘We are delighted with the quality of build provided by Spillers and the services of all the consultants involved in this project - in particular, Julia Humphries, the architect who

designed the building, and MRA, who have advised and supported us all the way through this process. Spillers have been a dream to work with particularly in their understanding of the needs of the school,’ said Sarah. The new facility was officially opened in a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 16 by David Heath MP. And it was a double celebration as Huish Episcopi has gained academy status.

The project consisted of the construction of two buildings which are now home to an art department and exhibition space, a study centre, a contemporary cafe and a multi-functional auditorium. Each building is linked by a first floor level walkway and extensions were also made to the science block. Keith Snelling, project quantity surveyor on behalf of Ridge, said: ‘'The innovative building has been designed, managed and completed within the financial parameters of the LSC’s requirements without compromising at any stage on the original brief. The building construction phase has been efficiently managed by RG Spiller and the new building clearly demonstrates innovative technology and a cost-effective solution that will enhance and inform the pupils’ education experience.’
