THE Government is giving out grants worth £24m to further develop the capability of electric vehicles so that they become suitable for the mass market.

Six projects will receive total funding of £52m, with £28m coming from private business contributions, to further develop their ideas.

The projects include a lightweight refuse collection vehicle, a powertrain energy recovery system, an extended range electric vehicle, an ultra- low emissions delivery van, a system to reverse the effects of the catalytic converter and the development of materials to make vehicles lighter. Details of the Government’s

new Plug-in car grant have also emerged, with up to £5,000 available for motorists to buy either electric, hydrogen or plug-in hybrid cars. The Government has seen the potential of a global market in low carbon vehicles unfolding and is taking steps to ensure the UK has an advantage over future competition.

Business Minister Mark Prisk said: ‘Collaboration between UK-based vehicle manufacturers, supply chain companies and academia will

help Britain become one of the leading centres for the design, development and manufacture of ultra-low carbon vehicles. This is about real business opportunities and hi-tech jobs being created from the move to a low carbon economy.’

In addition, plans for a national recharging network have moved forward with guidance released to the 15 places interested in bidding for the second round of the Plugged-In-Places infrastructure programme.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said: ‘We are on the brink of a technological revolution that will transform the way we see motoring in the 21st Century.’
