Why use natural stone? WORKING WITH STONE

Article from Markstone Granite

WHETHER you’re building a new house or renovating an old one, natural stone offers you unparalleled beauty, permanence and uniqueness - and adds true value to your home.

Natural stone is an outstanding

building material. It is durable as well as aesthetic, and can be supplied in almost any shape or form. Natural stone ages well. Whereas many building materials become unsightly over the course of the years, natural stone retains a natural patina, which is not detrimental to the beauty of the natural stone. Many natural stones are like good wine: they only attain their full elegance with advancing years. It is very low maintenance and the lifetime of natural stone is extremely long. With the right planning and construction, buildings of natural stone have been known to survive for many thousands of years.

As well as all of this, natural stone is ecological and environmentally compatible. It is found naturally in virtually finished form. No energy is needed for its actual manufacture. Energy is only consumed for quarrying and processing, but the share is small compared with other building materials. The unused stone waste can be used directly for filling in the parts of the quarry where stone has been extracted. Nothing is lost in the complete cycle of natural stone quarrying, processing and returning to nature.

It is because of all these reasons that natural stone has become so popular again in recent years. We have seen an increasing demand from people wanting to use natural stone both for the exterior and interior of their home.

Here at Markstone Granite, we stock both reclaimed and ‘new’ granite and slate. (When we say

new, of course it is the same age as the old stone, just hasn’t been out the ground as long!). This includes granite lintels, quoins and setts, and slate flooring, sills and hearths. The growing popularity of natural stone landscaping is due to the fact that stone fits the look of most homes. It works well on both formal and informal landscape designs, and once again the true beauty of the natural stone far outweighs a manufactured product. We stock various types and colours of natural stone for
