September 2010 BUSINESS & FINANCE Deadlines for sending in your tax returns


DURING the tax year there are key dates for sending in tax returns and making payments. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) can impose penalties and additional charges if you miss these dates. Soon after each new tax year (April 6), HMRC will contact you if they think you need to


complete a tax return. If you send your return on paper, you’ll receive a paper tax return. If you send your return online, you’ll receive a letter instead (called the ‘Notice to File’).


The deadline for all paper returns is midnight on October 31. If you send your tax return online, it must reach HMRC by


midnight on January 31. There are a few exceptions to these deadlines which are explained on the HMRC website.
