Consider winter tree planting plans WORKING WITH WOOD, TIMBER AND FOR

By Matthew Peaster of Wood-Land Southwest Ltd

WITH the summer months slowly rolling into autumn, now is the prime time to consider this winter’s tree planting plans. While some projects will be self-funding, there are grants available for certain projects. The Forestry Commission’s

Woodland Creation Grant is currently open for new applications. There is a window each summer to apply for this grant to help fund new woodland planting. The window closes on September 30 and there are maps and forms to be completed so prior planning will ensure a safe application submission. The

grant comprises two main parts, with an add on for favoured planting areas. For details, read www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/ewgs7- guide.pdf or contact a local woodland management business. Wood-Land Southwest Ltd, based in Somerset, planted 30,000 trees last planting season. The majority of these were 1ha- 3ha plantings of 1,000 to 3,500 trees to create small woods for clients with a few spare acres looking to enhance their land and become more sustainable. Building projects may also require hedge planting and buffer strips of tree planting. Planning early in the season helps contractors plan their work schedules and nurseries with planting stock and efficient supply of materials. Often many projects are left until the end of the financial year, some unavoidably, but this can add to the costs as many small local teams are already booked up. It’s also worth considering the tree and shrub species for these new schemes as this can make a big difference to the overall feel

of your landscaping project. *Matthew Peaster at Wood- Land Southwest Ltd can be contacted on 07980 664126.
