The Guide Christmas Post is up and running again
FOR many people in the Tavistock area the Guide Post is an important part of their Christmas preparations. 2010 will be the 23rd consecutive year that the local Brownies & Guides have organised a postal delivery scheme within the town, and they are keen this year to extend their service to even more customers than before. They usually deliver around 7,000 cards each year, but could comfortably handle an increase in turnover if more people would be prepared to support them.
Special stamps have been printed which cost 20p each. These are on sale from the girls themselves, as well as from various outlets in the town: Lake Pharmacy, Pillars Newsagents, Superdrug, Mainly Stationery, Tavistock Launderette, Ford Street Spar, URC Cards for Good Causes & Tavyside Health Centre. Anyone can buy stamps and use them on cards addressed to places within the town itself or Whitchurch village. Girlguiding Tavistock regrets it is unable to deliver to isolated houses, hamlets or villages as it cannot expect girls to walk to these remote places.
Cards can be posted in special blue postboxes situated at the above outlets as well as at Tavistock Methodist Church & the Guide HQ near the entrance to the main car park. The final time for posting is 5pm on

• The local Brownies & Guides have organised a postal delivery scheme for the last 22 years.
Friday 17th December. The boxes are then collected and all cards sorted into bundles for the Brownies and Guides to deliver over the weekend of Saturday 18th/Sunday 19th December.
Much hard work is put in by Guiding’s loyal band of volunteer leaders, who organise the service to ensure every card reaches its destination. This is not always easy if cards are not clearly or correctly addressed, but Guides do promise to “do their best” and go to great
lengths to satisfy all their customers.
Service to others is one of the core principles of Guiding, though the Post does of course provide financial benefits too. Money raised is usually divided between a nominated charity and Guiding activities over the following year.
