TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones

The Disk Defragmenter is scheduled these days, from Vista onwards, but not exactly at a time that is of any use to either the computer or us; one o’clock in the morning! To change this, open the disk defragmenter by going start>all programs>accessories>system tools. There is a scheduling option where you need to change the time to when the computer is likely to be on and while you are there, the machine really only needs to defrag the C:\ drive, so untick any others that you may have.

We are all being advised of the need to buy the new Office package; we are still doing very well on Office 2000, but I realise other people’s needs are different to ours. Do be aware though that before you attempt to install it on an older system, that it does need to be bang up to date first. So, make sure you have downloaded all the Windows updates before attempting it, otherwise you will waste more time than you may want to. It is always a good idea anyway for your PC to be as up to date as possible anyway as well as having an appropriate anti-virus.

If you are having speed issues with your broadband and we have had a lot lately, then try to use the speed checker suppliedby BT www.speedtester.bt.com . It is what lots of ISPs refer to as their arbiter for this sort of support call. Another one we use a lot is

www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk If you have a problem, make sure you do the obvious first though before calling; change microfilters, remove all phones and Sky and just plug the router in to the engineer’s socket. Having done that, it may then be a BT issue, but you have to convince your ISP first!

BBC iplayer has now really improved - most notably, the download can stay on your PC for 30 days instead of 7 and you are now - finally - allowed to export the program to different formats such as Windws Media Player so you can watch it on another device if you so choose! It has lots of other great features too - just look at the Rufus Hound videos on the site and they will tell you all the other titbits. For the Mac, it has most of the new features, but you can only watch it on the device it was downloaded on, though I am sure that will change.

www.top-battery.co.uk as they supply good quality batteries at great prices when compared to the usual authorised suppliers. Beware though, they come from Singapore so it takes a while, but they are reliable and good with proper customer service etc.

Laptop battery dead? There are lots of shops and sites that want to get your business to replace it and some of them are dodgy let alone the vendor behind it! We use
