Green Tip: Recycle Your Holiday Tree

Free curbside pickup of holiday trees is available between December 26 and January 31. On your regular garbage and recycling collection day, simply set your tree at the

curb or place inside the green yard waste cart. Trees will be hauled to the compost facility, where they will be used to make a beneficial mulch and compost.

• NO FLOCKED TREES accepted. Instead, cut and place in blue garbage cart.

• Remove lights, ornaments, tinsel and other trimmings from branches.

• Remove tree stands, metal or wood.

• Trees must be 6 feet or less. Please cut tree in half if it is taller than 6 feet. • No artificial trees.

Green Holiday Party Ideas

The holiday season is full of good times with friends and family, with lots of food, treats, gifts, decorations, and more. Here are some green holiday party tips.

• Use washable plates, utensils, napkins and tablecloths for holiday parties.

• Show your guests where to put recyclables such as aluminum, glass, and plastic beverage containers.

• Don’t waste food! After holiday festivities, put leftovers in recyclable containers and share them with family, friends, or others.

• Fill your dishwasher to capacity before running it. You will run fewer cycles, which saves energy.

• Save and reuse party hats, decorations, and favors.

• Make a New Year’s resolution to participate in Union City’s food scrap recycling program.

Green Tip: autumn & Winter leaf Drop

Autumn's "leaf-drop" is a beautiful time of the year but also a busy one for city street sweepers. From October to

January the Streets Division dedicates extra efforts to picking-up fallen leaves.

How you can help

• Move vehicles off the street on your neighborhood’s street sweeping day

• Do not rake leaves into piles in the street. Piles can clog gutters and may result in flooding during heavy rains

• Place leaves in large green waste recycling cart for weekly collection

A clean sweep means your street looks good and there's less dirt and debris going down the storm drain and pol-

luting the Bay. Call (510) 675-5308 to request a sweeping schedule.
