grade students,” says Bonda, “because they have both the physical coordination and the concentration skills necessary to benefit each week from the 45 minute classes. This age group is generally uninhibited and willing to try new things with enthusiasm.”
The Afterschool Program In addition to the core program, Minds
in Motion has two afterschool groups. Team XL (fourth graders) and Team XXL (fifth and sixth students). The afterschool groups are made up of students who especially excel and are invited to audition. Academic year 2010-2011 will be the first that Charlottesville will have a Team XXL, and the goal is to eventually expand the program to run through eighth grade, as it does in Richmond.

a lot of exposure to the limelight. According to Bonda, “Our Team XXL in Richmond has two to three performances a month. They’re in demand. Because they’re high energy, they’re fun to watch. And they look fantastic.” They’ve performed at venues like Children’s Hospital benefits, a Sheryl Crow concert, the Virginia Commission for the Arts Conference and even at former Governor Tim Kaine’s inauguration. Members of Team XXL are the ambassadors of the program. “That’s often how the word gets out,” Brett says. “People see a performance and ask: ‘How do you get boys to dance?’”
