India: Oonch Neech An open area full of obstacles like tree stumps, benches, and rocks

will quickly inspire Indian children to organize a game of “Oonch Neech.” Meaning “up and down,” this game of tag keeps kids hopping as they maneuver in and out of safe zones — oonch (up) or neech (down) — to avoid being tagged.

Number of Players: Four or more, ages 5 and up Materials: None, though you’ll need an outdoor space with lots of obstacles like tree stumps, a slide or sturdy benches. The Game: Whoever is “It” chooses either “oonch” or “neech.” If “It” chooses neech, then the ground is not safe. Runners on the ground can be tagged, but runners who are oonch — up on something like a stump or a large rock — are safe. Of course, the opposite is true as well. If “It” chooses oonch, then the ground is the safe zone. To start, kids scatter, and “It” gives a start signal to begin this fun game of tag. Kids will quickly realize that it’s no fun to stay only in the safe zones! The first person tagged becomes “It” for the next round. For an indoor variation, use the playroom or garage and scatter pillows or towels to serve as trees. Bonus: Improved physical fitness and some tired kids
