The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor
Iranian Nuclear Weapons Threat
Although Iran continues to claim its nuclear
development program is designed for peaceful purposes, U.S. intelligence services believe Iran is developing nuclear weapons. A number of countries have nuclear weapons, but these countries are considered stable and they fall within the parameters of mutual deterrence and rational conduct, except for North Korea. We are currently working with Russia, China, and other Asian countries to attempt to control North Korea’s nuclear threats. Iran poses a significant risk to use nuclear weapons because of its unstable leadership. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has proclaimed that Israel, the U.S., and other Western countries are Iran’s enemies, and could come under attack by Iran depending on conditions in the region and the world. The Iranian Defense Ministry recently published information on a nuclear attack strategy to be used against the U.S. and Israel and possibly other countries. Many Arab countries in the Middle East are
wary of Iran’s intentions and are concerned with the regional dominance of a nuclear-armed Iran. Economic sanctions imposed on Iran have not deterred it from developing nuclear weapons. Time is running out and the options to neutralize the Iranian nuclear weapons program are becoming more limited.

Litchfield Service People
A box is in the Town Hall lobby for donations for those from town in the service. Even if they are home for the holidays, we’d like to share with them.
Small Tube Co. Jack Algeo, president, has offered to mail them for us. Last year, we had a total of 20 packages filled for our men and women. I’m still in need of many addresses for our service people, so if you can, call me or drop off addresses in the container in the lobby; it would be helpful.

by Barbara O’Brien This past week, Windham
Firefighters successfully battled a building fire with the help of mutual aid from several other area
communities. According to Fire Chief Tom McPherson, the blaze involved a one and a half-story, wood-framed, single family home, located at 117 Indian River Road (Route 111). Two adults and a child were inside the house at the time the fire broke out. McPherson said that all of the occupants had vacated the building by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.
Due to the fact that
Windham Firefighters were in the midst of handling
two other calls for assistance at the time the structure fire was reported, Mutual Aid was provided by Londonderry and Nashua, which took over station coverage for Windham. Numerous firefighters from Salem, Hampstead, Pelham, Hudson, Londonderry, and Derry assisted at the fire scene. “Thanks to all the departments
that provided us with Mutual Aid,” McPherson said. “And hats off to all the firefighters who responded.” There were no reported injuries to either the occupants or firefighters. McPherson said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is not believed to be suspicious.

New Senior Council Member
The Hudson Senior’s Council on Aging is pleased to have the opportunity to announce a new member to the Council. Interviews were held at the meeting
of November 17, and the Council voted unanimously to accept Richard Tassi to fill the vacant seat. Tassi is a 32 year resident of Hudson. He is recently retired, and worked in the world of Architecture/Construction for the past 40 years. He volunteers at AARP during tax season and is also a volunteer on the building Committee for Benson Park.
Exciting things may be happening for the
senior’s in the coming year, so having a full Council is encouraging. Please join us in welcoming our new member.

Grateful Gobblers The fifth annual AHS Turkey Raffle and Silent
Auction was held on Saturday November 6 in the Alvirne High School gym, and it was another successful evening with over 90 turkeys handed
out, and many great auction items won. In order
for an event of this size to be held, many folks worked tirelessly behind the scenes and they all deserve a huge thank you. First of all, thank you to the many Hudson
businesses who see the value in supporting this endeavor; without your support, this event would not be possible. To the parents who donated money for turkeys, items for the raffle, or your time and talents behind the scene, thank you. To the athletes, who worked tirelessly that evening as ticket sellers, necklace sellers, concession help, wheel spinner helpers, or door prize ticket distributors, thank you … you all did a fabulous job. The support and generosity of AHS Principal
Bryan Lane, Athletic Director Karen Bonney, Custodian Gerry Michaud and his squad, Sara and John Conrad, Checkers, and all of the Vocational departments, is greatly appreciated. The Area News Group continues to support the AHS Boosters with their generosity, time and talents for the programs, advertising and printing services. Without the hard work of the turkey raffle committee, this event would not be nearly as successful as it was, so many thanks for your time, efforts and talents. Finally, to those in attendance at the raffle, we
thank you for your generosity participating in the raffle and the silent auction. We would like you to know that the funds raised will be used for scholarships for graduating seniors, awards nights, for the varsity banquet and many other items that the athletes of AHS require. We sincerely hope that all in attendance enjoyed themselves as much as we did!
