Muth Family Learning Center Cell
Phones....An Electronic Tether?
Cell phones are often a blessing and sometimes not so much. The issue at hand is how independent cell phone users can feel in terms of staying in touch with others and negotiating their environment.
Christmas Outreach
A recent article written by Barbara K. Hofer, Ph.D, professor of psychology at Middlebury College, Middlebury Vermont, surmises that, “students in the most contact with parents (using electronic devices) are those who are the least autonomous (independent)”. Sr. Hofer calls the cell phone connection between home and school an “electronic tether”. Of concern is the path of adolescent learners toward adulthood and that students looking for parent direction and soothing when facing academic challenges may feel and demonstrate less success than those who set their own goals.

It is possible for a student to use a cell phone to set up a personal calendar and to use this calendar to plan for teacher meetings as well as assignment completion. The habit of many students to expect parent contact on a regular basis while in a school setting can lead to learning dependency rather than independence. Students calling and contacting peers can be helpful and also can be distracting. The watchword is balance. When a parent can act as a sounding board and not a judge, a child can find the room to find solutions. It is not about letting young people flounder on their own but rather to help them foster independent and mature thinking.
