thegreenmoleforum For a sustainable Mole Valley
It’s hard to believe that almost a year has passed since this column first appeared, back in January. We hope it’s helped you to ‘do your bit’ in Mole Valley.
As a follow-up to last month’s “Home-made Christmas” meeting, Transition Bookham will be at the late night shopping event to offer advice on greening your festivities, and hope to offer eco cards, gift tags, etc.
‘Batteries required’ is a sad fact of modern life. You can buy electical gadgets that don’t need any, from wind- up and solar charged ones, to fruit and veg powered.
For presents that don’t cost the earth try searching online for the latest innovations in energy and resource saving, and do keep wrapping paper for re-use, along with xmas card fronts for you to make into gift tags.
If you must use batteries, consider rechargeables that help conserve valuable metals and prevent the throwing away of regular, single use alkaline ones.
NiMH rechargeable batteries can be reused up to 1000 times. Only buy high mAh rated (larger capacity) ones as they’ll last longer between charges. Avoid lower ratings, especially in C and D sizes, in case they’re a small capacity cell held in a plastic shell.
Water, water everywhere... so why do we buy 3 billion bottles (half a billion flown or shipped in from abroad) a year in the UK, creating a huge CO2
footprint?
Transporting it in the UK is equivalent to the annual energy use of 6,000 homes. An adult drinking 8 glasses a day would pay £1 a year in tap water charges, but £500 if they drank a mid-range mineral water.
Following a bumper crop of local produce, it’s been sad to see so much left to rot. Sue’s Preserves still needs home grown fruit and veg, in exchange for products.
Transition Dorking’s apple pressing event proved so popular it might become annual. Everyone enjoyed the juice, using up their ‘glut’, and Sondes Place Farm’s pigs had a treat of leftover pressings that evening.
Dawnay pupil Nicole Abreu received her £15 Vineries voucher from Anne Brewer, our ‘Green Granny’, for her contribution towards the Transition Bookham logo.
The other winner will hopefully feature next time, when this article will likely, err, transition into a Transition Bookham one.
Wishing you all a Merry, and eco friendly, Christmas, and a sustainable New Year.
