Regional Economic Development Center Helps Business Partners Grow and Prosper

by Doug Robinson For 16 years, the Regional Economic

Development Center (REDC) of southern New Hampshire has been providing gap financing, bridge loans, and other financial assistance to businesses throughout New Hampshire. In an effort to maximize and increase the range of business practices offered by REDC, the Center will be opening their first Regional Economic Development Center. The Center will be located in Raymond, NH,

which is centrally located within the region. In its new home, the Center “will become home to the REDC and will provide a base for ongoing work on the Comprehensive Economic Development

Strategy, which the REDC has administered for 11 years through a partnership with the US Department of Commerce,” states Laurel Bistany, Executive Director for REDC. The energy-efficient building has been designed to use the most cost-effective, energy-efficient designs and materials available. Funding for the new building will be paid for by a combination of the REDC’s own funds and grants that are awarded though a competitive bidding process. New Hampshire’s Community Development

Finance Authority has awarded the REDC a substantial grant to help fund creation of the center. Additional funding from this grant comes in the form of credits that New Hampshire

companies can take towards their Business Enterprise Tax, Business and Profits Tax, and Insurance Premium Tax. Seventy-five percent of every dollar of contribution to the REDC Center will be offset by a reduction in the amount of state taxes owed by contributing businesses. In addition, each $1,000 of donation ends up costing a participating company only $150 due to the ability to take a “donation” on a business’ Federal Return, states Bistany. REDC has proven to be an integral partner to those businesses who wish to grow, create jobs, and improve the quality of life in southern New Hampshire.

companies Resonetics and CCS Presentation, and Merrimack-based company The Merrimack Grand have all benefited from their relationship with REDC.

“I really enjoy working in REDC’s expanded territory; the business climate is diverse, the companies are innovative, and I look forward to many more opportunities to aid job creation,” stated Bistany. For more information about the REDC and

On October 21, Salem High’s Future Business Leaders of America Club (FBLA) participated in the 39th annual Fall Leadership Workshop at Daniel Webster College. They started the day by having breakfast at Daniel Webster; an opening ceremony from the leadership team; a workshop in the gymnasium and in the auditorium; lunch, and then a closing ceremony. In the gymnasium, the schools participated in a trust and teamwork workshop. In the auditorium, the FBLA members

learned whether they were a “feeler” or “thinker” and what type of personality that had. Prior to the occasion, the chapters were asked to make a bucket that followed this year’s national theme, “Breaking Barriers,” and asked to fill the bucket with donations for the Make- a-Wish Foundation. All the buckets came out phenomenal and raised over $1,000 for Make-a- Wish. This year’s workshop was a great turnout, and Salem’s FBLA cannot wait until the State Leadership Conference in the spring!
