The Ross Gazette Monty’s manor marvels shine in the sun

The 2010 Ryder Cup was described as the “greatest ever” as the sun shone on the dramatic final day at The Celtic Manor Resort. Celtic Manor Wales Open champion Graeme McDowell enjoyed his second winning moment

in the space of four months on the spectacular Twenty Ten Course when it fell upon him to secure the winning point for Europe in the very last match. When Europe set out in the morning mist with a 9½-6½ lead, it seemed victory might

become a procession, but Steve Stricker took down European No 1 Lee Westwood in the opening match and Dustin Johnson closed the gap to one point by beating Martin Kaymer 6&4. Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Miguel Angel Jiménez struck back to leave Europe on the brink while the unbeaten Stewart Cink secured another half point for the USA. Tiger Woods completed a Ryder Cup of some personal redemption with another singles victory while Phil Mickelson and Jeff Overton were also handsome winners. When Rickie Fowler grabbed an improbable halved match with Edoardo Molinari thanks to

three closing birdies, The Ryder Cup was suddenly up for grabs once more. After Zach Johnson saw off Padraig Harrington on the 16th green the scores were locked and

Europe needed the full point from the final match to prevent USA retaining The Ryder Cup. McDowell did not disappoint by holing a beautiful birdie putt on the 16th. Moments later a

par was good enough in front of the Twenty Ten Club members’ pavilion on the 17th hole to start the champagne flowing. “This is the greatest Ryder Cup ever witnessed on either side of the Atlantic,” said Phil Weaver, Chairman of the Professional Golfers Association, at the closing ceremony.
