jewelled baubles, three for £3.99, and purple clip-on butterflies. A set of three for £7.99.

We deck the halls, gift wrap the presents and dress up in our finery for Christmas Day - but often the dining table gets left to the last minute.

But the good news is that it only takes a little imagination and a few decorative touches to make it a stunning focal point for the celebrations. "My message is have fun with the table, rather than

regarding it as the final chore of the preparations," says Clare Harris, founder of Talking Tables, which provides party accessories. "Creating a table with a 'wow' factor sets the tone for the

entire celebration and its look should let your guests and family feel that the occasion's fun, rather than formal or too fussy. "You're aiming for an effect that helps people relax

instantly and something that's so lovely they'll want to linger." Clare insists there's no need to spend a fortune. Instead, let

the creative juices flow and use accessories you already have, together with a few new, surprise touches. "There's nothing wrong with getting the children, family

or guests involved in the table decoration on Christmas morning. Youngsters could use glittery pens to write place labels, or collect ivy from the garden to tie around napkins or perhaps for a long strand to go down the table. "And involving others doesn't just spread the load for you, it also helps people enjoy feeling they've played a part in creating a special setting and are involved in the occasion even before they've sat down for the feast." Coloured crackers, a scattering of table gems, mini sparklers, and tying napkins with pretty ribbon may be all it

takes to turn on the style, says Clare. "All those touches will add to the atmosphere and make the table a feast for the eye. You'll know you got it right if people linger there enjoying it long after the meal's over!" So create a Christmas table to impress by choosing one of these winning looks. On-trend purple Rich, plummy shades - the favourites for room decor this winter - look stunning used for table decorations, especially contrasting with pure white or, more regally, with gold. Interior designer Nina Campbell is choosing purples, teals and fuchsia for her festive table. She says: "I never hold back on decorating the table, and use it as the place to experiment with different looks, while my room decorations are always traditional." She uses flowers as the centre point, featuring blooms with

deep red hues such as blowsy roses and branches with red berries, all arranged in a large vase to add height. "I think purple and red glass creates maximum dramatic

impact, so choose vases, tea light holders and glasses in those colours."

and lay it down the centre of the table. Thread it with flowers if you have time. Add small clusters of nuts, sprayed gold or purple, votives and a string of table lights. Get the look: Sainsbury's selection of coloured

Glittering and magical Shimmering metallics - gold or silver - paired with white are the choice for a table that sparkles as much as the occasion. "I love this look because it can be elegant and classic or fun and contemporary," says Clare Harris.

"You can use silver candlesticks and crystal, or maybe gold charger plates and cutlery for a traditional look. "Or make it look more funky and light by accessorising with throw-away accessories, from silver party poppers and paper napkins to tiny silver tealights."

For an easy-peasy centrepiece, fill a glass or crystal bowl with Clementines decorated with sweet-smelling cloves. Add bunches of cinnamon sticks tied with white ribbon. Her tip: Pop tiny treats in small boxes beside each plate, such as sweets or toy jewellery that everyone has to wear.
