As the artists completed their work, the installation of this project revealed itself to be more rich and complex than any of us had ever imagined. In one of my many fruitful conversations with Elizabeth Ferrer, we hatched a plan to spread the exhibition out and activate the galleries of BHS and the BRIC Rotunda Gallery, two spaces that reside catty-corner and within a stone’s throw of each other. Elizabeth also agreed to write the insightful essay that is presented in this catalog. I also convey personal thanks to BRIC’s Executive Director, Leslie Schultz, for supporting the collabora- tion with enthusiasm and grace. BRIC Contemporary Art staff Christian Fuller, Samantha Vernon, Hawley Hussey, and Linda Mboya worked with great dedication and skill in the realization of this project.
Finally, I extend great thanks to our funders, The Getty Foundation and The Greenwall Foundation, for their support and their lively interest in a project that is part art, part history, and that is 100% about rethinking ideas and turning history artfully and energetically on its head.
