As I‟ve explained in the preceding pages, “The Art of
Living Well” is about doing the things you like to do, the things that make you happy. It‟s also about making those little necessities that we perform daily, more interesting. This will be an ongoing section within our magazine so I will have the opportunity to cover other areas with each new edition.
Did you know that most of us don‟t use our precious
possessions, that these items we value so much, (our best china, the silver, our jewelry, that gorgeous dress with the lovely shoes to match, etc., etc.) are all languishing away in some closet, to be brought our only on special occasions, once or twice per year? Does this make sense? No it doesn‟t but this is a well known fact.
Here is where we come in! - First, you are the
most special person in the universe and every single day of your life is a special occasion.
Why are you leaving your best china, your silverware,
your beautiful dress, and all those other special things for that “special day” that you don‟t know for certain will arrive? Instead, use the best china even if it‟s not every day, bring out the silver, look at it, enjoy it, use it. That is why you bought it. In other words, these things that bring you pleas- ure on those special occasions, can bring you even more pleasure if you use them regularly, on yourselves, learn to enjoy what you own, little things make all the difference.
Let us begin with the start of your day, there are so
many things we can do to make our days more enjoyable, to make every minute of the day a special one. I‟ll elaborate.
When you get up in the morning, as we all must. How do you like to be awakened? I for example detest loud noises, particularly in the mornings but some of you might enjoy music, if you do, you might want to choose a favorite station to wake up to, one that plays your fa- vorite tunes and this way you begin your day on a happi- er note.
Now that the mornings are colder wouldn‟t it be won- derful to wrap yourself in a warm flannel robe and to slip you feet into warm fluffy slippers. These are the little luxuries that we sometimes overlook.
We brush our teeth, wash our faces, take a shower, dry off and perform all our daily routines in a kind of semi- conscious state. Why not take some time to enjoy all of these daily tasks a little more. How?
Do you enjoy the taste of your toothpaste? Probably not, its also possible that you‟ve never given it any thought. Well let me tell you, there are some great tasting tooth- pastes out there. If you are health conscious the way most of us are, you can get natural ones from your health food store, that taste like spices, (mint, anise, clove, cinnamon, etc.) and of course a mouthwash to match or you can simply mix equal parts of lemon juice, water and a little baking soda for fresher breath and whiter teeth.
Washing our faces in the morning, can become a skin nourishing ritual, specially now during colder weather season when our skin is exposed to constant changes. Choose a milder moisturizing cleanser and pat your skin dry, never rub. Slather on moisturizer, whichever one is appropriate for your skin type. Do this in a leisurely fashion. Make the necessary time adjustments so that you are not rushed, this way it will seem like a mini spa treatment.
Taking a shower or a bath should also be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, after all we do this every day, sometimes more than once a day, all of our lives. So, take the time to choose a nice smelling soap and a fluffy towel and some nice bath salts or oils. Light some scent- ed candles. Whatever it is you like that will make bath- ing feel like a marvelous experience.
These are just a few of the many things that we can change or adjust to begin making a difference in our days and how we go about them. -
