SIRE ROAD TESTS GALASTAR BLUESKY C

heshire-born and bred Galastar Bluesky has emerged as the latest Picston Shottle son at Genus ABS, causing

a stir among type enthusiasts as he occupies third place in the UK-bred Type list after the August proofs behind Cogent Loader and his sire Shottle. Bluesky already has a vast array of highly scored siblings.

His dam, Wreakeside JB Ola 3 VG89 by Jocko Besne, was contracted by Genus to Shottle resulting in four full brothers including Bluesky (the other three bulls have only four reg- istered daughters between them, three of which are scored, one VG87 and the other two are GP) and six Shottle sisters. Of the females, three are already EX with a further two VG and the youngest is GP84-2yr. Ola also had daughters at each calving; an EX91-2E Gibson and an EX90 Allen in her first and second calvings respectively. Calving only twice, her best record was her second when she produced a 305 day lactation of 13,509 kg at 3.53% fat and 3.18% protein for her owners Ian and Philomena Scarisbrick. Ola’s dam, Wreakeside Fred Ola 2, was imported from the

USA as an embryo and is out of a VG86 Melwood daughter, Jafral Melwood Ola. Bluesky’s grand dam, Fred Ola 2, also only had two lactations with the best being her first when she gave 8572 kg in 305 days at 3.44% fat and 3.08% pro- tein and unfortunately she was never scored, but her dam, the Melwood donor cow, was a sixth generation VG or EX. Bluesky has already sired a VG88 two-year-old here in the

UK; Hardwick Blue Sky Matilda owned by the Saxby family in Lincolnshire (featured elsewhere in the Journal in the VG heifer article). With just over 130 registered progeny, he has 68 already classified with 45 of these GP, with four VG daugh-

ters in two herds, 18 Good and a sole Fair scored daughter. When Bluesky was released after the August proof run he

had 53 daughters in 34 herds contributing to his 2.56 Type Merit, showing his daughters are calving and scoring all the time. Furthermore he had 70 daughters in 45 herds contrib- uting to his production figures which currently stand at a moderate +210 kg milk, but pleasing +0.08% fat (+14.6 kg) and +0.05% protein (+10.5 kg). From a longevity and functionality perspective, Bluesky seems to tick the right boxes. He has a positive Lifespan,

now a few months old with numerous more in the pipeline from this Oman son who now tops the UK and Interbull PLI list. Goldwyn and he are the only bulls to exceed 1.5 for Type in the top 15 of the PLI list.

T Man-O-Man, who is marketed

in the UK by World Wide Sires, ranks at £235 PLI, which he can attribute to high production both in terms of volume and components. He offers nearly 700 kg milk, coupled with virtu- ally 30 kg fat and just over 30 kg protein, with a positive fat deviation of 0.03% and positive protein of 0.09%. He also boasts a positive Lifespan score, is plus on Fertility Index and both Maternal and Daughter Calving Ease being, sanction- ing his use on maiden heifer), alongside a slight reduction of Cell Count with his daughters, all indicators suggest long term productivity and profitability in his daughters.

84% reliability in his Type, with them reasonably well distributed through 63 herds. Pleasingly Man-O-Man cou- ples this production with a well bal- anced linear. His overall Type Merit of 1.61 is made up of many positives and lacks major areas for concern. At 2.25 on stature, his daughters can be expected to show some height but also they should have plenty of width with good pluses on both chest width and rump width, belying somewhat

his calving ease. Body depth is positive, if only moderately, at 0.8 and angularity has a similar score suggesting a robust- ness to the Man-O-Man daughters. Leg set has a tendency towards being straight with a very good steep foot angle and the one area for protection would be on rump angle where he rates slightly high at -0.33. Udder wise this bull secures above the board improvement
