SHOW SCENE
Hefyn Wilson’s Ridgefield Goldwyn Cinderella West Dairy Show and the Welsh Dairy Show
nce again the Welsh Dairy Show brought out a large crowd and an excellent turn out of Holsteins. From the Emerald Isle, we had the well-known judge and personality Tom Kelly (Monamore) making the decisions in what turned out to be some hotly contested classes.
TREGIBBY RETURNS TO THE TOP O
The first class, in-calf heifers with six entries, gave our judge a difficult time with some very different heifers both in age and proximity to calving. After giving all a thorough look over, he went for heifer on the point of calving in Tregibby Shottle Cinderella from Richard and Bethan Thomas, explaining it was her frame and shape of udder that gave her the advantage over the Williams’ homebred Lyganlan LB Sherry Red. Front end and locomotion gave this heifer a close placing over the Law family’s Fryn Final Cut Primrose. Cow in calf saw the Thomas’s homebred Gatrog ASL Bengal
36 lead the way from the Wilson entry Tregibby Cousteau Cozy. Judge Kelly preferred the bone quality, power and locomotion in his winner but admired the udder quality in his second placed, which gave her the advantage over Glaslough Talent Kim Red from G R Griffith & Son.
Heifers in milk resulted in a very close placing and judge Kelly tried his line up different ways before finally going for the Wilsons of Tregibby with Eola Big Celicia. Teat quality and better bone quality gave his winner the edge over the powerful bodied Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina, yet another from this great family. Rosina just had too much power and height of rear udder over another lovely heifer from the Millers, Moorshard Talent Rachel.
The Heifer Championship went the way of the two in milk animals and a first red, white and blue card to the Wilsons of Tregibby.
The class for junior cows having had two calves saw another close placing and a late change at the top between Castellhyfryd Spirte Jean from Simon Davies and the jointly owned Waliswood Goldwyn Glorious 50 from Paul Bessie and Bryn Williams. The Davies’ winner showed more style and width of rear udder according to judge Kelly’s reasons, but he did admire the openness of rib and fore udder of his second placed cow, which gave her the advantage over Strumble Lheros
Scream 69 from the Jones’ of Kidwelly. Judge Tom Kelly had an easier task with the third calvers and Ridgefield Goldwyn Cinderella carried on her winning run for the Wilsons. Great udder quality, both fore and rear, gave her the advantage over the Harries’ second placed Rockset Goldwyn Rachel 4. Another cow admired by our judge, Rachel was admired for her length of neck, clean bone and style, but it was her better teat placement that gave her the advantage over the Miller’s Moorshard Jordan Rosa 77 in third place.
The last class of the day was led by a cow in great form; the Wilson’s homebred TG Lynda who our judge admired for her uphill run and best udder in class. She was followed by Riverdane Iron Beauty from Gatrog who edged out another from Moorshard in former winner Outside Delight, having slightly better bone and locomotion.
At Championship time, a great ring of cattle was on hand to hear our judge Tom Kelly praise all the animals forward in the classes and his final contenders. With his top class reasons delivered in true cowman’s language and in a style only he can do, Tom lavished praise on his winner and tapped forward Hefyn Wilson with Ridgefield Goldwyn Cinderella. Reserve went to Rockset Goldwyn Rachel 4, a great result for the Harries family from Crosshands. Honourable Mention went again to the senior cow, again from Tregibby.
It had been another top class show with a cow turned out fantastically well by the Tregibby team, proving again that good families breed so many good cows regardless of the sire. Mentioned before in my reports, you have to be good to beat that man from Tregibby and so it proved again.
he 2010 Llandyfaelog Show and South Wales Champion of Champions was a great success again despite the horrendous rain for 24 hours before show morning. Judge Ed Seaton (Styche) was very professional and precise in his judgement throughout the day. The quality of stock was once again of a high standard with numerous entries in each class.
LLANDYFAELOG SHOW T
Winning the morning show was Strumble Lheros Scream 69, recently classified VG89-3yr from E R & M E Jones & Sons, calved since May with a Baxter heifer calf. She was shown giving 44 kg. The Reserve Championship went to A H Wilson & Son with their
homebred Tregibby Geraldine 41 by Tregibby Leadership.
In the heifer classes, the Jones family took the honours with their fresh homebred heifer Feithy ER Grey 7, with Weeton Golden Oralie from E & C Thomas of Gatrog in reserve.
