SHOW SCENE CINDERELLA WENT TO THE BALL

what more could we ask for to spend a day out in Somerset? The Showering Pavilion saw a Holstein ring full of superb animals being judged by Eric Hanson from Demark, himself the owner of many top cows in his country. His different approach to judging, placing the bottom cow fi rst and fi nishing of with his class winner, kept the ringside guessing for a while. First class of the day was for cows in calf and leading the way was Kea Babs 23 from the Green family in Dorset. Judge Hanson admired her spine, topline, length of neck and overall dairyness. Second place went to the Wilsons with Tregibby Cousteau Cozy who had an advantage in her udder qualities over Page and Newman’s Blanche Samuelo April. The in calf heifers were a tough decision for our judge but he fi nally went for the Hinks family’s Kingtonmagna Jasper Rutje with her better locomotion and cleanness through

the shoulder and neck. Second place went to the Davies’ entry Distinctive Advent Lizzie, who had the edge in bone quality and locomotion over the Thomas’ entry Tregibby Shottle Cinderella from Llandyfaelog in South Wales.

First of the heifer in milk classes for juniors went the way of

Tregibby with Eola BG Celicia but only after some changes to initial line up. Commenting on the great udders right down the line, judge Hanson told the crowd in his reasons that his winner walked the best and showed the best rear udder. From Honiton, the Bishop family’s Curscombe Gideon Renate 4 in second place had a slightly better rump angle and ligament than Kingspool Spirte Roma 2 from the Kings of Bristol who was recently calved. In the senior heifers, our judge explained that he had a clear winner from Richard Bown with a heifer with great balance and ring presence. Showing him all the qualities he was looking for in her length of neck, open rib and clean bone, Richaven Shottle Squaw led the way. Second place went to the Miller family from Moorshard with Talent Rachel, who our judge said had the best udder in class and this gave her the advantage over another from the Hinks, Kingtonmagna Affi rmed Honey. Come Heifer Championship time, judge Eric Hanson had no hesitation in making the Bown’s senior heifer his winner with Tregibby’s junior heifer in reserve. First of the cow classes was led by homebred Davlea Shottle Raven from the Davies’ team; a stylish cow and a handy winner in judge Hanson’s opinion. Her frame, front legs and rear udder gave her the win over Indianhead Rubens Blackrose from Mikali and Excellence Holsteins in Dorset. Judge Hanson preferred her balance and clean bone over Chalclyffe Shottle Candice from the Cobb family in third.

The intermediate cow class was led by the Wilson’s with the well-known Ridgefi eld Goldwyn Cinderella who judge Hanson said was an easy winner. Quality of udder, clean bone gave her the advantage over another from the Green team in Dorset in

Sanigar Tradesmark Arlene. His second placed cow showed more balance in the udder over last year’s Champion, Ridgefi eld Gibson Cherril, in third place.

The senior cow class was led by the Hinks with Crichel Stormatic Pamela in what our judge described as an impressive class with good cows right down to last place. He admired the balance, strong front end and well-attached udder of his winner. It was good to see her breeder Tim Harding at the ringside, although not as streamlined as the cow and when he sold her as a maiden heifer in his dispersal sale. Second place went to a cow having had eight calves from the Bown’s team, Ketby Bud 85. Judge Hanson praised this cow for her overall quality, age and udder and gave her a slight advantage over third placed cow, Moorshard Jordan Franly from the Millers.

Finishing the day was Championship time and, following his different style of judging and some excellent farmer’s reasons, judge Eric Hanson, who had kept the ringside interested right up to his fi nal decision, made Ridgefi eld Goldwyn Cinderella his Champion and Crichel Stormatic Pamela his Reserve.

It was a great show at an excellent venue with top class cows, but you cannot keep a good man down as Hefyn Wilson led Cinderella, the belle of the ball, to her victory.
