SALES SUMMARY Holstein bulls to 3,350gns at Moira
Prices reached a ceiling of 3,350gns at Holstein NI’s 23rd annual autumn bull show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira. Hitting the headlines at 3,350gns was the first prize winning Killane Lamb, brought out by David and Austin Perry, Ahoghill. This April 2009 born entry was sired by Burlane Tennyson, and is backed by two EX’s. His dam, Killane Stormatic Lucy 27, gave over 9,000 kg at 4.57% butterfat and 3.38% protein in her fourth 305 day lactation. He sold to William Parke from County Down. Following close behind at 3,300gns was Ards Rossiter bred by Harry Patton and Sons, Newtownards. Born in March 2009, he is a Mascol son bred from five successive generations of EX. His dam, Ards Outside C Ruth 2 gave over 13,000 kg at 3.74% butterfat and 2.97% protein in her third lactation. This bull won the Honourable Mention ribbons and sold to Lyle Bryson, Dunadry. Mascol was also behind the breeding of Prehen Matador ET
which came under the hammer at 3,200gns for Robert and Stuart Smith, Londonderry. Born in April 2009, he is bred from six generations of VG. The buyer was S Caldwell from Beragh. Fourth highest price of the day 3,100gns was paid to Jim Morrison, Downpatrick, for Inch Stalwart. This fourth prize winner was born in June 2009, and is by Regancrest Mr Durham Sam. His dam is the VG89 Picston Shottle daughter, Inch Shottle Daphne. He was snapped up by Mr Dillon from Poyntzpass. Ronald McLean and Sons, Donaghmore, sold their best at 3,000gns. The second prize winning Relough Render was sired by Picston Shottle, and from six successive generations of EX. This 13-month-old bull sold to David and Alan Wallace, Antrim. Next best at 2,850gns was Relough Remark ET, a Sandy Valley Bolton son, also consigned by the McLean family. This second prize entry was born in September 2009, and is backed by four generations of EX. His dam is Relough Durham Ruth EX94. He sold to Sean O’Brien from Poyntzpass. The April 2009 born Ballycairn Spooky Major realised 2,750gns
for the McCollum’s, Coleraine. Bred from seven generations of VG and EX, he was sired by Huddlestone Spooky. He sold to Gareth Forsythe, Loughguile. A September born Leif son also realised 2,750gns for William and Andrew McCollum. Backed by two generations of EX, Ballycairn Leif Turbo ET is a maternal brother to Ballycairn Goldwyn Tina VG86 2yr – the number five PLI (+£306) cow in the UK. The buyer was George Rainey, Beragh.
Also selling at 2,750gns was the Supreme Champion, Relough Rustler, consigned by Ronald McLean and Sons. This June 2009 born bull was sired by Picston Shottle, and boasts eight generations of EX. He sold to Riddle Murphy, Derrynoose. Jonny Cousar from the Howcommon herd in Kilmarnock was Judge. He awarded the Reserve to Derrydorragh Kevin Ratcliff, a June 2009 born Huddlestone Spooky son bred by Willard Watson, Macosquin. Bred from five generations of VG, he comes from the Kylie family, and made 2,700gns. This bull also scooped the milk quality award, and sold to Tom Adams from Rathkenny. Also selling at 2,700gns was the first prize winning Killane Dunadry, an August 2009 born Andacres Morty Onward son, bred by David Perry, Ahoghill. He is bred from five generations of EX, from the noted Dellia family. This one joins George Bingham’s herd based at Sevenmile Straight, Nutt’s Corner. The third and final bid of 2,700gns was paid to the McLean family for the first prize winning Relough Lifeguard. The event was generously sponsored by Gortavoy Feeds. Average: 41 bulls £2,146.
Auctioneers: R A Noble and Co, Clogher Brandhall disperse their Holsteins
A useful crowd gathered at Beeston Castle Auction for the Dispersal of the Brandhall Herd on behalf of Mr Peter Eardley of Brand Hall Farm, Norton-in-Hales, Nr. Market Drayton who was ceasing milk production on the farm. The herd was managed very well on a commercial basis averaging just under 10,000kg, was full of young cows following an all year round calving pattern and on classification averaged just under 84 points. Top price was 2550 gns for Brandhall Shot Grace EX90-4yr, an outstanding third calf daughter of Shottle who calved for the third time in July and was sold giving 41.8 kg daily. She was one of several leading lots purchased by Andrew Winward of Tarvin who also purchased Brandhall Lucente Susan VG87 a young, handsome cow due with her third in January to Matson for 2050 gns and Brandhall Jordan Perla VG85-3yr who had calved her second in August for 2000 gns. Two animals made 2200 gns each; the first, Brandhall Champion Grace VG87-2yr, a milking heifer sired by Champion who calved in January and had just been PD’d positively in-calf to a September service to Jeeves. She was purchased by Paul and Mark Robinson for their Woodhey Herd at Faddiley, Nantwich. At the same figure was the last milker to be sold, the fresh heifer, Brandhall Monty Rachel, a daughter of Galastar Monty that had calved a week; she was purchased by JL & EM Parker of Haughton, Stafford. The only other to make 2000 gns was Brandhall Modest Ella VG89, a red daughter of Sikkema-Star-W Modesto, who had calved her third calf in August and was sold giving 53 kg daily. She was purchased by E & HM Sheldon of Stinchcombe, Gloucestershire. Averages: 128 cows and milking heifers (including 49 heifer calves at foot at £499.71) £1317.42; 27 served heifers £1105.61; 47 maiden heifers £865.24; 202 lots £1183.90. Auctioneers: Wright Manley.
Toystory daughter leads Moira
Trade was fast at Holstein NI’s recent heifer show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.
Prices reached a ceiling of 2,550gns, paid to Geoffrey Patton, Carrowdore, for Carrowcroft Toystory E Ruby. This Jenny Lou Mrshl Toystory daughter was bred from ten generations of VG and EX dams, and sold giving 37.5 kgs. Two heifers came under the hammer of auctioneer, Michael
Taaffe, at 2,520gns each. They included Ards Baxter Danna, brought out by Harry Patton and Sons, Newtownards. Backed by six generations of VG and EX dams, she is currently giving 36 kgs daily. Also selling at 2,520gns was Newry Goldrun J Rosalie, exhibited by Jim Stevenson, Kilkeel. This heifer was sired by the home-bred Braedale Goldwyn son, Newry Goldwyn, and is backed by six generations of VG and EX dams. She is yielding 33 kgs per day. Judge, Paul Dunn from Bangor, awarded the championship ribbons to Dunadry Greta 29, an outstanding Braedale Pagewire daughter shown by Robert Shanks and Sons, from Dunadry. This heifer is giving 36 kgs per day, and sold for 2,450gns. The reserve champion was Bannwater New Laucot Nancy
78, which sold at 2,500gns for vendor, Andrew Magowan, Rathfriland.
