Firefly Lighting Design Red Fort Indian restaurant, Soho London

Soho’s Red Fort has been one of London’s finest Indian restaurants for many years. Firefly Lighting Design was bought on board to create a lighting scheme for the venue. ‘We were hired to provide modernisation and subtle visual enhancements both to the main restaurant and the basement bar,’ explains Peter Veale from Firefly. Energy efficient solutions were used for both accenting and linear effects in the main restaurant and the basement bar. Concealed lines of light accent the bar and the ‘snugs’. LED striplights have been used behind the bar where access is difficult and LED downlights accent the Indian tiles by the stairs. Firefly chose to use Cube IRC MR16 adjustable downlights to accent all of the tables, while LED downlights from ACDC Lighting were used to illuminate the Indian tiles, including those by the stairs where access is difficult. LED lighting was also selected to illuminate the front of the bar, in the form of LED linear fittings from Light Graphix. Osram LED tape was chosen to create uplighting from behind the seating to illuminate the walls. Osram IRC halogen lamps were used throughout the venue. ‘LED lighting helps where maintenance is difficult, and also where heat is an issue,’ explains Veale. The LED lighting is used near seating and bottles on the bar. ‘It also helps pass Part L.’ Veale stresses the importance of the use of lighting within a restaurant: ‘It couldn’t be more vital, as are all lighting controls so that the late-night setting is romantic and relaxed.

Firefly Lighting Design creates the perfect setting for Red Fort in Soho.
