In addition, for tennis lighting, the LTA specifies that there must be a 600lux rating, to provide precise lighting for the optimum sporting environment.’ Controls systems can play a key role when it comes to sports lighting. A full Helvar DIGIDIM system has been installed at Newham IAC, a new indoor sports arena built with the 2012 Olympics in mind. The

Following appraisals, Thorn has redesigned its Areaflood range to accept discharge lamps from 70W to 600W. The optic is based on the more powerful Champion sports projector, with an inclined front glass and integrated visor giving precise light control. The result is a product suitable for mounting heights of 6-8m, which meets the ILE Guidelines for the control of light pollution referred to in most planning applications, without the need for tilting the floodlight. Areaflood can be supplied with lighting controls and hot-restrike gear. It now fills the long awaited request for a precision floodlight for smaller sports projects. RIDI Lighting has supplied St George’s College, Weybridge with the lighting for its renowned indoor facilities. The tennis provision at the college is amongst the best in the country, with 26 courts manned by a team of LTA qualified coaches. In a project worth around £30,000, 160 RIDI ABR-SPORT luminaires were used in the main lighting runs above the courts, and another 32 have been used to provide the background illumination around the outskirts.

A combination of build quality and

precise performance was vital for the project as Mike Attard, managing director at RIDI explains: ‘The ABR-SPORT is fitted with a specially manufactured steel reinforced, crossblade louvre that complies with DIN 18032. This is a German sports hall lighting standard for

centre management, the neighbouring school (who share the use of the facilities) and local athletics clubs to effectively manage the lighting while ensuring energy

savings are made when possible. Of key importance was the ability to balance functional lighting – so that all sports could be played safely and in comfort – with the need to conserve energy wherever possible. For this reason a DIGIDIM system was specified to manage light levels and introduce lighting flexibility into the games hall. According to Colin Price of Newham Council, this feature was a key to achieving the lighting design goals: ‘We knew that the centre would be open all hours with various areas being in use at any one time. What was obvious is that there would be times – for example badminton matches during the evening – when a large percentage of the Centre would be empty. From our point of view it would have been unacceptable to have all the lights on if just one area was in use. This was where the Helvar partnership came in. We were able to design a system that could easily isolate the lighting in certain areas and lower or raise light levels to suit at other times. We’re delighted with the result.’
