Cote Selected Direct Support Care Person of the Year

submitted by Jordan Ulery The New Hampshire Council on

Developmental Disabilities at their annual meeting announced the Direct Support Care Person of the Year. This year’s meeting was held at the Grand Summit Hotel in Bartlett. Persons selected for the award have dedicated their lives to assisting a person in their care with developmental disabilities. “Direct Care” is the one-on-one provision of support, assistance, and personal care to those who need such help. This year’s recipient was Laurent “Butch” Cote of Bennington. The award is given for dedication to the profession of direct care and in excellence in providing that care to a developmentally disabled person. Butch is a member of Council 5162 in Hudson

Knights of Columbus. Butch provides Direct Care to Paul in Bennington. Butch Cote is a former resident of Hudson and moved to Bennington when his wife, Barbara, began working at a local long-term care developmentally disabled care facility in the area. She now works as a Registered Nurse with brain-injured persons at another regional educational and care facility. The sense of caring and helping runs strong in the family. Congratulations to Butch and his family on this award from his extended family in the Knights of Columbus. The New Hampshire Council on Developmental Disabilities is a federally funded agency that supports public policies and initiatives that remove barriers and promote opportunities

in all areas of life. The Council is independent of State government and the agencies that provide services to people with disabilities. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Family Fraternal Service Organization of over 7,000 families in New Hampshire.

Alvirne’s beloved top turkey, Gerry Michaud, at the Booster’s Fifth Annual Turkey Raffle.

by Maureen Gillum The Alvirne Bronco Booster Club’s Fifth Annual Turkey Raffle and Silent Auction held in the AHS gym on November 6 was a major success with lots of fun, turkeys and prizes. “This is our largest annual event to support Alvirne’s entire athletic program,” gratefully shared Alvirne High School’s Athletic Director, Karen Bonney.

“It’s also Guaranteed Tire Pricing!

become a really fun community event for all ages.” Thanks to another strong community turnout - and the loyal support of more than 100 business and personal sponsors - the 2010 Turkey Raffle was a highly entertaining and successful evening. This year’s familiar line-up of “chief turkeys” included the lively emcee team of Alvirne teacher and football coach, John Conrad, and long-time Booster members, Dale Brigham and Sue LaRoche. AHS Principal, Bryan Lane, once again led the fast paced Bronco Beads ‘Heads or Tails’ game, which included a cash pot round to benefit the Zach Tompkins Fund. “The Alvirne Bronco Boosters are the main support group for all

of Alvirne’s athletic teams,” stated Sue LaRoche, Booster president. She explained the Boosters sponsors the seasonal AHS’ sports awards nights (Alvirne varsity sweatshirts), six annual senior scholarships, and the annual varsity awards banquet for more than 250 athletes and coaches each year. The parent volunteer club also helps with key items that may not be covered in the athletic budget such as the new concussion software, the press box, scorer’s table, and a medical defibrillator unit.

“Our next big Booster goal is to get a set of bathrooms and a storage facility closer to the fields for athletes, coaches and fans, hopefully within the next few years,” concluded LaRoche with optimistic determination. Relying on and serving the community, the Booster club is largely funded through the annual fall turkey raffle and Booster’s on-going concession stand efforts during soccer, football, and track. The annual Turkey Raffle also brings together the entire Alvirne High School community, including most sports teams, Alvirne Culinary Arts, AHS Blooming Broncos, and Alvirne Vet Tech.
