2007 NCAA Tournament #3 Pitt 84, #11 VCU 79 OT (Second Round) March 15, 2007 • HSBC Arena, Buffalo, N.Y.
VCU seniors B.A. Walker and Jesse Pellot-Rosa scored 20
points each and sparked a frantic second-half rally, but the Rams fell in overtime to third-seeded Pittsburgh, 84-79 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at HSBC Arena. VCU, which trailed by as many as 19 points with 12
minutes remaining, took its first lead of the game at 69-67 on a Pellot-Rosa putback with 52.1 seconds left, capping a furious 17-2 burst. However, Pitt raced down the court and Levance Fields found Sam Young for a game-tying layup with 48 ticks remaining. The Rams were unable to convert on their ensuing possession and Fields drew a two-shot foul with 2.1 seconds on the clock. VCU survived, however, as Fields misfired on both attempts, allowing time to run out in regulation. In overtime, back-to-back 3-pointers by Fields and Ronald
Ramon staked the Panthers to a 78-71 advantage with 2:16 showing. VCU fought back again, trimming the margin to 80-77 on a rebounds and putback by junior Jamal Schuler with 33.5 left. Young missed two free throws on Pitt’s next possession, and sophomore Eric Maynor cut it to 80-79 with a drive and layup with 22.6 left. But the Rams would get no closer. Two free throws by Pitt’s Mike Cook made the score 82-79 and Walker could not get his 3-pointer to fall with 11 seconds left. Five players scored in double figures for Pitt, including
Young, who had 15. Aaron Gray chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

2009 NCAA Tournament #6 UCLA 65, #11 VCU 64 (First Round) March 15, 2009 • Wachovia Center, Philadelphia, Pa.
For a brief moment, it began to look like VCU déjà vu. Ultimately, VCUwas unable to pull off another stunning
NCAA Tournament upset, dropping a 65-64 heartbreaker to UCLA Thursday before 17,140 at the Wachovia Center. VCU senior Eric Maynor scored a game-high 21 points, but his 18-foot fade-away jumper fell short as time expired. Two years ago, Maynor hit a 16-foot jump shot with 1.8 seconds left to beat Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Maynor added seven assists and six rebounds, while sopho-
more Larry Sanders registered his 11th double-double of the season with 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Rams (24-10). Freshman Bradford Burgess chipped in with 10 points and junior T.J. Gwynn added eight points and five boards off the bench. Josh Shipp led five UCLA players in double figures with 16
points. Jrue Holiday threw in 13 points and six assists and Nikola Dragovic added 10 points and 13 rebounds. The Rams trailed by 11 at 55-44 with 8:04 remaining, but
fought their way back into the game. Maynor and sophomore Joey Rodriguez combined for an 8-0 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers, to pull VCU within 61-58 with 3:17 on the clock. After the teams traded baskets, Maynor hit two free throws with 48.0 seconds remaining to trim the lead to 65-64. On the ensuing UCLA possession, Sanders rejected a Col-
lison layup attempt, which led to a shot-clock violation with 13.0 seconds left. VCU had to go the length of the floor, and the Bruins
pressured Maynor the entire way. With time winding down, Maynor drove left, stopped and pump-faked twice before letting go of his final shot. The loss brought a conclusion to the collegiate career of
arguably the greatest player to wear a VCU uniform. Maynor finished as the Rams all-time leader in points (1,953), assists (674) and games played (130).
