1983 NCAA Tournament Georgia 56, VCU 54 (Second Round) March 19, 1983 • Greensboro Coliseum (Greensboro, N.C.)
For the second time in as many visits, VCU had its trip to
the tournament come to an abrupt end on a last-second shot. It would also be the second time the Rams faced a team that would eventually reach the Final Four. In capturing the Southeastern Conference champion-
ship, Georgia earned a No. 4 seed and a bye into the second round of the tournament. Coming off of their win against La Salle, the Rams were looking to advance to the next level, but would have to pull an upset to do it. VCU took its first lead of the game when Fred Brown fol-
lowed up a missed free throw to put the Rams up 10-9 with 13:31 remaining in the first half. On two different occasions, VCU stretched its lead to six points, its biggest margin of the game. The Rams held the lead until the 2:57 mark of the first half, when Georgia’s Vern Fleming hit a jumper for a 27-25 lead. The Bulldogs ended the half with a 29-27 lead. Georgia slowly began to build its lead in the second half, as the advantage wavered between four and six points for the opening five minutes. When the Bulldogs’ Gerald Crosby hit a free throw with 14:31 left in the game, it gave them a 44-35 lead. Georgia would hold a nine-point lead four times before VCU began a comeback. Trailing 50-41, the Rams went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 52 when Randy Corker hit one of two free throws. VCU took its first lead of the second half when Corker hit a jump shot with two minutes remaining to put the Rams up 54-52. Georgia tied the score again, then held the ball for the final 80 seconds of the game, when Lamar Heard was able to hit a shot with only two seconds remaining for the win. Georgia’s Vern Fleming led all scorers with 16 points. Fred
Brown led VCU with 14 points, while Calvin Duncan and Michael Brown added 13 and 10, respectively. The Rams finished the season 24-7.

1984 NCAA Tournament VCU 70, Northeastern 69 (First Round) March 16, 1984 • Meadowlands Arena (East Rutherford, N.J.)
After fighting off one of the best offensive performances
by a team in NCAA tournament history, Virginia Common- wealth University saw yet another postseason game come down to the final shot. This time, however, it was the Rams’ turn to escape and move on. VCU won yet another Sun Belt Conference regular season
title, but fell to rival UAB in the conference tournament semifinals and was granted an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament. As the sixth seed in the East Region, the Rams drew 11th-seeded Northeastern, out of the ECAC North Atlantic conference. With the scored tied at 68, Northeastern’s Glen Miller
converted the front end of a one-and-one to give the Huskies a one-point lead. The Rams’ Don Franco missed a jump shot from the left corner, but it went out-of-bounds off of Northeastern. On the inbounds play, VCU’s Rolando Lamb got the pass at the top of the key and put up an off-balance jumper that went through the net as time expired. Lamb’s basket gave him 10 points for the game, and the Rams had five players in double figures, led by Michael Brown and Mike Schlegel with 16 each. Northeastern’s Reggie Lewis had a phenomenal game, hitting 15 of his 17 field-goal attempts and finishing with 31 points. The Rams had overcome what still ranks as the third-best shooting performance by any team in NCAA tour- nament history (the Huskies were 33-of-44, for 75 percent from the floor) to move on to the second round for the third consecutive time.
