When the Real West Met the Reel West Moviemaking in Colorado, 1897–1916

The first two decades of filmmaking closely followed the era of western expansion—mirrored by the industry’s own movement from the East to the West Coast. Before film companies settled in Southern California, they developed the Western genre in places like Colorado. Between 1904 and 1912, Colorado was a locus of the cinematic revolu- tion. A look behind the scenes at the movies produced on location reveals the genesis of the mass-media culture we live in today: in many ways, 1910 looks surprisingly like 2010.

Noted film historian and author of Hollywood, Colorado, David Emrich will examine the crossroads where the real West met the reel West, using still photos and clips from such landmark productions as The Great Train Robbery (Edison 1903); Tracked by Bloodhounds, or, A Lynching of Cripple Creek (Selig 1904); The Cattle Rustlers (Selig 1908); and Hell’s Hinges (Triangle 1916).
