thegreenmoleforum For a sustainable Mole Valley
Last month’s 10:10:10 ‘day of doing’ saw 7,000+ events being held in 188 countries. Transition members handed out information in Bookham on the Saturday morning.
As well as tips on conserving resources they suggested ways to reduce contributions to landfill, by using local amenities, as part of their Don’t Dump, Donate! initiative. It was great to see public interest, and the large number of shoppers with reuseable bags!
Bookham’s school pupils are actively engaging in green initiatives, many now grow some produce. Additionally Polesden Lacey infants built a plastic bottle greenhouse.
The latest project was to make a big world map showing where their food comes from. Pupils also looked at transportation issues - items grown in this country often go abroad for processing before they reach our shops.
The 1st is World Vegan Day,
why not look on the labels of consumables you buy to see if they contain animal ingredients, and try to find animal-free alternatives.
Congratulations to two Dawnay pupils who each won a £15 Vineries voucher for their entries to Transition Bookham’s logo design competition. Their ideas contributed to the final design which is currently being honed.
Major motor manufacturers are rushing to bring electric cars to market, it’s a shame concepts like Toyota’s 2001 diesel ES3
87 mpg combined never entered production.
Amazingly, students entering Shell’s 2010 Eco-marathon achieved almost 7,000 mpg equivalent, with an internal combustion engine, and over 11,500 mpg on a fuel cell.
Britain now has the world's largest wind farm, off the coast of Kent, but only a fifth of the approximately £800m invested apparently went to UK based firms.
Turbine maker Vestas, of Denmark, which shut its Isle of Wight factory last year, had the biggest contract. Turbines are the most expensive component, so revenue from any future projects will likely go abroad. Only 3%-5% of UK energy currently comes from renewables, ranking us 25th
of 27 in Europe.
If you haven't already seen the excellent movie, The Age of Stupid, then get along to Transition Dorking's screening on Thursday 18th November at 7.30pm.
Showing in the Green Room, behind Dorking Halls, tickets are available from Mystery Mountain in Dene Street, at all Transition Dorking events, or ’phone 077 2443 2441.
