Rockin’ reserves! with Rocky

Summer’s here! If you’re desperate to head outdoors and do something exciting, how about a trip to one of the RSPB’s remarkable reserves? There are over 100 of these nature havens in the UK so there’s bound to be one near you, but here are a few of my favourite spots…

Newport Wetlands: Watch ducks, geese and swans and take part in activities like bat and moth watching at this reserve minutes from the city. You might spot a rare Cetti’s warbler or bearded tit too!

Rathlin Island: Off the

coast of Antrim, a visit to this island begins with a ferry ride when you might see auks, gannets and gulls. You can also get up close to seals, hares and even puffins if you’re lucky!

Rainham Marshes: You wouldn’t expect to see

swifts, hobbies and oystercatchers in London, would you? But at this reserve with its futuristic visitor centre you can do just that! There’s

an adventure play area too – awesome!

Vane Farm: If you’re new to birdwatching, this

reserve in Scotland is a great place to start. Visit the viewing hides for close-up views of wildlife including ospreys, redshanks and great spotted woodpeckers!

If you’re lucky enough to be able to visit an RSPB reserve this summer, send me a postcard letting me know where you went and what birds you saw,

and in return I’ll send you one of my exclusive Puffin Protector postcards! Post a card to me at Freepost Ptolemy’s Pteam HQ (you don’t need a stamp!) or email a photo to rocky@puffinpost.co.uk. I can’t wait to hear about your birdwatching

adventures!
