Minotaur Pâté

It was Rosemary’s last day in Paris. Tomorrow she and her parents would

be returning home to England. They had been staying with Rosemary’s aunt and uncle, and had gone out shopping, that morning, to buy them a farewell gift.

They were on the Left Bank, wandering back from the River Seine through a maze of narrow side streets. Eventually, getting slightly lost, they had stopped to consult a map. And that was when they saw the shop.

It was a small, old-fashioned looking shop, with a purple-and-white striped awning. The sign above the door read: Edibles.

“Perfect! A food shop!” said Rosemary’s mother. “We might find them something here.”

They came through the door into a cool, musty interior. It was lit entirely by candles, their flames casting flickering shadows about the walls. The walls were lined with shelves

packed with bottles and little jars.

“Wow!” exclaimed Rosemary’s father. “I’ve got to get this on tape!”

He took out his camcorder and began filming.

Rosemary looked closer at the shelves. One of the jars caught her eye; it was coloured deep red and seemed to glow from within.

“Minotaur Liver Pâté with Roast Tomato and Red Wine”, said Rosemary, reading from the label.

“Minotaur?” said her father, taking the jar from her hand. “Oh I get it!” He laughed, showing his wife. “It says Cretan Bull’s Liver Pâté. Well done, Rosemary, you’re right, the Minotaur did come from Crete!”

But Rosemary had intended no joke; she had merely spoken aloud what she had read.

Just then there was a sudden screeching and something shot up out of dark. It was a cat: a long skinny, white cat who snatched away the camcorder and

disappeared with it under the shelves.
