Charlie Higson
What inspired you to write it?
Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, I Am Legend, The Lord of the Rings, Homer’s The Iliad…
Why did you want to write a horror book?
I wanted a change from James Bond. I’ve always loved horror films and books and my own kids are obsessed with zombies. I really wanted to scare the pants off my readers and take them on a thrill ride.
Would you like to live in a deserted city?
For a week or so it’d be great fun. After that it would start to get tough and lonely.
Did you get scared writing The Enemy?

Q&A
If you’re of a nervous disposition, look away now. In fact, just turn over this page quick! Young Bond creator Charlie Higson has written a fantastically scary new book, The Enemy, about zombies taking over the world. Puffin Post managed to pluck up the courage to quiz Charlie about his new project!
Describe The Enemy in five words. Kids versus zombies (did it in three).
Once or twice I wondered if I’d gone too far. But mostly it was fiendish fun.
What scares you?
The same as most people. Real life. All the ghastly things that can happen to us. Not monsters and ghosts and demons.
How many books will be in the series?
I’ll write as many as my readers want to read.
What’s the next book about?
The Dead follows a different bunch of kids trying to
survive in London after the disaster. As the book progresses we see their story start to join with the story and characters from book one.
Do you test the books on your children?
I sure do. I read them to my youngest as I write each chapter. If he’s not scared enough I try to make it worse, and worse and worse until he has a terrible nightmare – then I know I’ve got it right!
