saturday 9 Alice in Chains In the ‘90s there were four big names in the Seattle grunge music scene, the first three being Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, and the third being Alice in Chains. Like Nirvana, Alice in Chains lost their lead singer, Layne Staley in 2002, but unlike Nirvana, never officially broke up. It always seems a bit strange when bands replace the lead singer, but the grunge must go on. Now, William DuVall has taken over on lead vocals and Alice in Chains has released their first album since Staley’s passing. This time around the band combines more heavy metal and hard rock elements to their sound and it sounds pretty awesome. 7pm, Memorial Coliseum.

sunday 10 Tyler Hilton No, he’s not Paris’s brother, but you may remember Tyler Hilton from the Johnny Cash bio-pic Walk the Line, in which he played the king himself, Elvis. Not only that, but he covered two Elvis songs for the soundtrack, and as a child grew up teaching himself the King’s music. Hilton has a sweet voice, which blends nicely with his acoustic pop sound. 6:30pm, Alberta Rose Theater.

wednesday 13 Liz Phair In the ‘90s Liz Phair was known for her lo-fi pop-rock sound and smart, provocative lyrics. In the ‘00s Phair took on a more mainstream pop sound with her single, “Why Can’t I?” Whatever decade you’re in, it’s undeniable that Phair is a remarkable songwriter with stunning vocals. 9pm, Doug Fir Lounge.

friday 8 O.A.R. After checking out O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) the likelihood you’ll confuse them with a paddle to row down the river with will disappear. Though, with their roots and reggae inspired rock and roll, O.A.R. definitely plays the type of music you’d want to kick back and listen to while floating along whatever body of water you choose. The band has a jam-band type feel and leans more on their rock influences than reggae. 8pm, McDonald Theater.

“WHY CAN’T I” GET LIZ PHAIR’S SONG OUT OF MY HEAD? THE SINGER HEADLINES AT PORTLAND’S DOUG FIR LOUNGE ON 10/13.
