Sanam Te
Changing menus is always a risky business as people get into the habit of choosing the same things over and over again, however the skill is for the chef to make improvements on already popular dishes and tickle diners’ taste buds even more.
Our visit, on a cold October evening, coincided with a busy week at work and having food just delivered to the table whilst we sat and had a ‘lads night’ with a beer or two in hand was just what the doctor ordered.
Visiting the Sanam Restaurant on King Street, Alfreton has been our pleasure over the years.
We have never yet been disappointed with the quality of food and the
cheerful service on offer at the Sanam
and our visit this time was to check out the exciting new menu.
The other great thing was that we had told Iqbal, the owner of the Sanam, just to surprise us and bring us whatever he felt that we would enjoy. So, sat in the corner of the restaurant, chewing the fat of the day’s work, we awaited our treat.
First to arrive were three dishes, one of which was salmon. Now, I am not a fish man but in the interest of fair play I was willing to try it and I was pleasantly surprised. marinated in fresh dill yogurt and chef’s special spices and roasted in the tandoor we all agreed this was a delicious dish and well balanced.
Chicken Tikka and Lamb with spices cooked in a clay oven came next. These were very tasty starters to tempt us with.
Next up, Sheshli Kebab green peppers and tomatoes, a firm favourite with diners at the Sanam. We fought over this one, but agreed to share it!
After a few minutes break we embarked on our main courses.
Amrit Sari. Fresh cod cooked with tomatoes, onions, punjabi spices, ginger,

garlic and Indian herbs in a medium thick sauce. I can see why fish lovers would enjoy this dish as the softness of the cod which just fell apart mixed with the chef’s secret spice mixes is a truly tasty dish even for a fish heathen like me.
Sahi Korma - Mild and smooth in texture. Chicken breast seethed slowly in a blends of herbs, cashew nuts and cream. This was a very smooth dish and extremely soft to the palete with the cashew nuts really evident. Thick pieces of chicken were beautifully cooked and very soft too.
Achari Mazah Special. A special Masala which is obtained from various spices and herbs which are blended in the right quantity and include fresh ginger, garlic, methi, cumin seeds and cinnamon with a touch of Achari masala. The mixture of herbs gives the taste buds quite a testing, I could really taste the ginger coming through in the sauce and yet it didn’t overpower the rest of the spices. The chef really knows how to blend spices without one having the upper hand.
Our work(!) done we sat discussing our meal. Paul, an Indian food connoisseur was very satisfied with the dishes on offer, and he takes a bit of pleasing when dining out. Scott and I are Sanam affecianados and have always felt you get quality food at the right price here.
Try the new dishes for yourself, stray away from what you normally have and you will add a few new dishes to your repertoire we are sure.
If you are planning an evening out with friends ensure that you book in advance as they get pretty busy at this time of year.
