Valentino’s Restaurant

6 HIGH STREET, RIPLEY, DERBYSHIRE. TELEPHONE 01773 512244 Offering English, Italian, Mexican, Vegetarian Dishes

Having had a very busy week, my husband offer to take me out for a meal and suggested we try a restaurant in Ripley, called Valentino’s. Not waiting to be asked twice I jumped in the car and off we went.

Parking was easy as the restaurant was a very short walk from the market place with free parking in the evening. We arrived around 7.30pm, ready for something tasty and we were not disappointed. Valentino’s has been on the High Street in Ripley for the past 7 years and the owner Andria Karami felt it was time for a makeover and has recently redecorated, turning it into a very relaxing Mediterranean restaurant. There is room for approximately 40 diners, the layout catering for a mixture of larger groups or couples. We noticed that wheelchair access was well catered for, and Andria explained she was always happy to accommodate any additional space required.

The outside of the restaurant gives no clue to what lies within and when we entered the door, other diners were already enjoying their meals, which is always a good sign. We were shown to our table by Gareth, which was decorated with fresh flowers and a candle on crisp beige table linen. Also on the table were bread sticks and fresh olives together with a jug of iced lemon water. Gareth offered us the wine list, food menu and advised of the ‘special board’ on the wall. When we asked about various dishes our waitress, Rea was very knowledgeable and suggested options to the set menu. We chose a

half litre of the house Merlot while we decided on our choice of dishes; we ordered our meal and relaxed in the warm atmosphere. For starters I ordered stuffed Portabella Mushroom with salad garnish which came well presented with a beautiful fresh salad. My husband chose the Seafood Platter, which was a selection of Scampi, Calamari, and Plaice goujons in bread crumbs, cooked golden brown and served with garlic mayonnaise. Both dishes were very generous portions, well cooked and very enjoyable.

For our choice of main course I chose Lasagne in a Bolognese sauce, layered with pasta and béchamel sauce, oven baked and topped with Mozzarella and cheddar served with a side salad and warm fresh garlic bread. My husband chose Steak Casanova from the specials menu, with a red wine and bacon sauce, seasoned vegetables and chips. He had been given a choice of steak and decided on fillet. The steak was cooked to his liking and the whole meal was most enjoyable. Again we received very generous portions and we felt the amount and quality of the food was exceptionally good value.

I particularly enjoyed a

honey and mustard vinaigrette which the owner Andria had made on my request.

For our dessert I had homemade apple pie which was offered with a choice of ice cream, cream or custard, I opted for ice cream, the apples had a slight acidic taste which complemented the sweet pastry of the pie. My husband had his favourite, treacle sponge with fresh pouring cream. The sponge was light and moist and was a perfect end to the meal.

We finished off our evening with a coffee and chatted with Andria who explained that all meat, fruit and vegetables are sourced from local suppliers. She also mentioned that she offers a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes.
