The Major Oak is the most famous of the ancient oaks of Sherwood and weighs an estimated 23 tonnes, its trunk circumference is 33 feet (10m) and its branches spread to over 92 feet (28m). In a 2002 survey the Major Oak was voted “Britain’s favourite tree”. It was previously known as The Cockpen Tree as its hollow trunk was once used to pen cockerels. Sherwood's ancient oaks are reputed to have been the favoured hiding places of Robin Hood and his Merry Men and according to local lore, the Major Oak itself was one of them. Though if, as legend has it, Robin roamed Sherwood in the 12th or 13th century, the Major Oak would have been a mere sapling then.

Edwinstowe in Sherwood
Forest Edwinstowe, known as Robin Hood’s village, lies in the heart of Sherwood Forest which is world famous as the home of the legendary outlaw. Sherwood was first recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Sciryuda’, ‘the woodland belonging to the shire’, and stretches over 181 sq. miles from Worksop to Nottingham.
Tragically, much of the ancient forest has been lost over centuries of human activity and development. Happily, many ancient woodland and rare lowland heathland fragments remain. The Sherwood Forest Trust, based in Edwinstowe, is the only charity working exclusively for Sherwood. Since 1995, they have been protecting and restoring this historic landscape for future generations of people and wildlife to enjoy.
A key area of Trust work is in Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, home of the ‘Major Oak’. Their ‘Birklands Project’ works with partners to restore 350 hectares of ancient wood pasture. Conifers are cleared from around ancient oaks, giving them renewed vigour and space for their saplings to grow. Other natural areas are enhanced by controlling scrub, birch and non-native

species, and reintroducing traditional grazing to restore the open wood pasture and improve peoples’ access.
The Trust’s community involvement activities include reviving old Sherwood customs. In Edwinstowe, their annual May Day and Harvest Fayre events involve different school and community groups in workshops to create traditional ‘green men’ and ‘corn goddesses’. These feature in popular public processions from the village centre into the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve.
