Day 2 Your Dreams as a Child…

Now it is time to create a list of your desires. Do you remember your childhood dreams about what you wanted to be when you grew up? For example - When I grow up I am going to be a teacher, an actor, or a zoologist. Here are a few triggers to get you started. Stop for a moment and think back to the times when:

• You were playing with your toys. • Reading your favorite story or comic book. • Talking or playing with your imaginary friends. • Playing games in the schoolyard or at the park.

Or maybe there were other times or situations when you thought about what you wanted to do with your life, perhaps when you were a teenager or in your early 20’s.

Take a moment to think about when you were:

• Meeting people you most admired or looked up to as role models • Having discussions with your high school or college friends • Attending special events that left you in awe or inspired you

Next, think about how you felt when when these events influenced what you thought about doing or being. For instance, “At the time I felt like I wanted to be helpful and kind, famous or save animals.”

To do this exercise, it’s best to be on your own, to find a quiet space, and allocate time. You could look at early photographs of yourself as a child/teenager/young adult to help jog your memory and feelings. Remember: Write your answers in the first-person, so that you own these experiences and feelings.

Look over the list of feeling words on page 15. You can also use these words to help jog your memory and define your feelings. Use the space available on the following page to do the exercise.
