AHS Football Garners Two Victories
by Sue LaRoche On Saturday, October 16, the Broncos
played Division III Pelham in fierce winds and came away with a 14-12 victory.
It
was a well-played game by both squads; with the Broncos doing all of their scoring in the first half and the Pythons in the second half, a missed extra point attempt by Pelham turned out to be the difference in the game.
Alvirne scored on the first play from scrimmage when Sean Sipsey on an end around scampered 76 yards to put the Broncos on top, 6-0. Tony Beaulieu added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Pelham’s next possession resulted in a punt that was partially blocked, giving the Broncos the ball on Pelham’s side of the field. Jesse Horne ran three times for 31 yards, and Sipsey took it in from the five for his second score of the day and a Bronco 13-0 lead. Again, Beaulieu tacked on the extra point for a 14-0 lead, which Alvirne took into halftime. At 2:09 of the third quarter, on its second possession, Pelham scored on a 39-yard touchdown pass, but a poor snap on the point after attempt left the score at 14-6. In the final quarter, Pelham recovered an Alvirne fumble, but could not convert on a fourth and 15 when Jon Baldwin intercepted to give the Broncos the ball back with 6:28 to play. Alvirne could not pick up a first down and turned the ball over on downs. Pelham’s offense then took to the air and moved the ball down the field. The Pelham quarterback then took the ball the final 13 yards to paydirt, narrowing the gap to 14-12. With :57 seconds remaining, a two-point conversion was stuffed by Jon Baldwin, giving the Broncos a 14-12 win. Sipsey had 76 yards and two touchdowns,
followed by Baldwin with 81 yards rushing, Horne with 20 yards, and Alex Bryan with 15 yards. Dan Connolly had 11 tackles, followed by Baldwin

Jonathan Baldwin goes for a tackle on Pelham’s Joe Perrone
with nine and Adam Bellerose and Adam Bower with eight apiece. On Friday, October 22, against Spaulding, four different Broncos scored touchdowns for Alvirne to give them a thrilling 28-21 victory in the waning moments of the game. With 13 seconds remaining in the game, Baldwin scored on a seven-yard run to put Alvirne on top, and Beaulieu added his fourth extra point of the contest, earning the Broncos their first Division II victory of the season. The Broncos controlled the running game with nearly 300 yards rushing, and all four touchdowns were rushing touchdowns for the Broncos. After Spaulding opened the game with a touchdown, Horne opened the scoring for the Broncos in the first quarter with a 25-yard touchdown run, and Beaulieu added the extra point to tie the game at 7. The score would stay 7-7 until the half. In the third quarter, Alvirne went down 14-7, but a recovered fumble by Dan Connolly gave Alvirne the ball on the Spaulding 15-yard line, and a one-yard scamper by Patrick Reidy tied the score at 14 with 1:20 to play in the quarter. The Broncos took the lead in the fourth quarter when Sipsey had a 62-yard touchdown run (Beaulieu with the extra point) to give Alvirne the first lead of the game. It was short- lived, however, as Spaulding scored less than two minutes later and the 21-21 tie would last until the final 13 seconds when Baldwin took it seven yards to paydirt. Horne finished with 133 yards,
Sean Sipsey carries against Pelham as the line tries to catch up
