Super Legends Duo Draws Crowd

by Robyn Hatch At the Masonic Temple on 107 Main Street in Salem,

Super Legends, starring Stan Jr. and Liz Saunders, recently performed to a full house. The American Legion Post 63 Ladies Auxiliary sponsored this show, with the proceeds to benefit Salemhaven’s new van fund. Super Legends’ performances encompass the sounds

of Las Vegas, country music, easy listening, old-time rock-and-roll, and a touch of gospel, offering something for everyone who attends. No Super Legends show is complete without “The King,” who added to the variety of specialty numbers on the duo’s guitar, fiddle, banjo, harmonica, and keyboards.

Scouting for Food, Helping Neighbors

by Andrea Ganley-Dannewitz With the holiday season quickly approaching, our most vulnerable and less- fortunate Salem neighbors sometimes find themselves choosing between a Thanksgiving or Christmas for their families, or food needed for every-day life. Help is available and those who rely on donations the most – our community’s food pantries – see their shelves empty out quickly before, during, and after the holiday season. Kay Panciocco, Coordinator of Volunteers for the Food For The Hungry Food

Pantry at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, says that at the current time, they are filling at least 60 bags a week for families in Salem, and that is only one food pantry. That number will quickly increase and possibly even double as the holidays set in. Kay says that donations are always needed, but during the holiday season and particularly during this downward economy, donations are needed more than ever. Thank goodness for Boy Scouts of America, including all Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Eagle Scouts as well; their annual food drive, which always occurs just before the holiday season, has already been scheduled. Residents should keep a watch on November 6 for door hangers being left by

local Scout Troops. Residents are asked to hold onto the door hangers to remind them to fill bags with non-perishable food items seven days later. Local troops will return on November 13 to pick up the food in bags that residents leave out and will deliver them to all the food pantries throughout Salem. The food is actually first brought to Central Fire Station on Main Street for sorting and boxing, preparing the packages there for delivery. Kay says what all pantries need most are canned fruit, canned vegetables, tuna,

bean products, baked beans, soups, and stews. Non-perishable packaged foods such as pasta, bagged noodles, boxed meals, cereals, raman noodles, and child- friendly foods like canned pasta products and macaroni and cheese are what are needed most to keep the shelves full and provide nutritious food to Salem’s less-fortunate families. Many also tend to forget that paper products such as toilet paper and paper towels are needed at food pantries, along with personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, shampoo, and laundry detergent. Local resident and former Scoutmaster of Troop 159, Mark Schaible, remains

active in the Scouting for Food drive, along with many other former troop leaders and parent volunteers (don’t forget Mom!). Mark says the products the pantries run out of the fastest and the most often are paper products, canned stews, bean products, and, most importantly, canned fruit. “I think people forget about some of these products when making donations

during food drives,” Mark said. “Most importantly is canned fruit; it costs a little more and it’s overlooked. Also, certain pastas, rice, canned stew, and bagged noodles—people don’t realize a meal for two can be stretched to a meal for four by adding noodles to soups and stews,” he added. Mark also noted the downward economy is affecting so many people who

made by Scouts last year were down in total numbers. We’ve had several years in the past where we collected over 10,000 items, helping as many pantries as we could, but many are not able to donate during these really tough times,” Mark said. He also noted the donations Scouting For Food collects is a minor part of the overall donations food pantries receive, with donations coming from the government, small private donations, the New Hampshire Food Bank (which struggles within itself to keep their shelves full), and donations from local grocery stores, butchers (occasionally), and farmers (when crops are in season). “We just cover the staples.
