home for the first time for her brother’s piano recital, she felt a strong connection to the residents there. “I grew up in Russia, and lived in an orphanage for eight years of my life.… I feel that the first years and the last years of lives are very critical, and neither should be spent in an institution. But if necessary, then those places should be made the best they can.” She immediately asked if she could volunteer, and has spent every Saturday morning, for the last four years, running a Bingo game. Aly built strong bonds with many residents and often brings them crossword books, flowers and even socks. She enjoys working with the elderly and learning their life stories. “I want to have the nursing home be a place where they can feel love and be comfortable. I want to make the last years of their lives good ones,” Aly says. “This experience has definitely opened my eyes to what I want to do with my life, and what I was meant to do in this world.”
Mary Dittmar, The Covenant School After learning about the International Justice Mission,
a human rights agency that works to secure justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression, Mary Dittmar’s ninth-grade class decided to adopt the organization as cause.
