Susan Powell

Sales Consultant Every Thanksgiving my father’s family gathers at my grandparent’s house for

dinner. It’s a tradition that’s persisted since long before I was born. We’re fortunate that most of the family is local, which makes for a nice, big dinner party — with close to 30 in attendance! My grandparents are no longer around, but we are thankful to still be able to gather in their house, a place that offers wonderful memories of years past. Each family member always brings a special dish; moreover, they are expected to bring the same dish, every year. (With 30 people: “Bring what you brought last year or who knows what we’d end up with!” makes the most sense.) I always bring my favorite dessert: Magic Cookie Bars. They are filled with chocolate and nuts and they’re absolutely delicious. Over the years I have added my own twists — using less coconut; adding more chocolate morsels; substituting pecans for walnuts; or baking them right before dinner, so they can be served warm and gooey. I secretly like to make these all year round. It’s a quick nuke in the microwave and, in minutes, I have both Magic Cookie Bars and instant memories of the holidays, family and friends.
