The Albero opens – College’s new high-class restaurant
Northampton College’s new Town Centre restaurant is now open and will provide top class dining alongside the best possible training opportunities for catering and hospitality learners. The Albero is located at Lower Mounts opened on Thursday 7th October. Deriving its name from Mediterranean themes and run largely by former students who are now experienced professionals, the new restaurant will offer a high-quality dining experience to paying customers. Food will be prepared and served by apprentices and students employed on a part time basis.
The Albero will be headed up by a team of skilled chefs and front of house staff including former learner Liam Goodwill, who worked most recently as Head Chef at the Pheasant in Keyston – a finalist restaurant on Gordon Ramsay’s F Word last year. Principal, Len Closs said, ‘We are extremely excited about our new restaurant at Lower Mounts which exemplifies our continued commitment to training for the catering and hospitality industry, providing our customers with a dining experience of the finest quality and our learners with the best possible development opportunities . Running the restaurant as a commercial venture will provide the College with a new income stream which will allow investment in resources and facilities to serve the wider college community. The Albero really is a shop window for the best we can offer.’The Albero’s menu will be created using local produce. Mediterranean dishes will include roast partridge, spiced pumpkin velouté, flame grilled mackerel, celery and apple sorbet and liquorice ice cream.

Keith Wallis worked on this summer’s blockbuster Robin Hood with Russell Crowe and has trained many stars over the last few years. He has 17 qualifications with the BASSC and BADC.
The events start at 10.00am and finishes at 4.00pm. The price is £30 and includes lunch and a certificate. Places are limited and early bookings are advisable.
BRITISH EXPLORER LAUNCHES TRANS OZ BIKE RIDE
In a journey that killed the first travellers, British cyclist and explorer Mike Laird is calling for volunteer cyclists to race with him across Australia, from Melbourne to Cairns. The 3,200 kilometre trek, which Mr Laird previously completed solo in May this year, will in the early stages retrace the steps of the ill fated Burke and Wills expedition of 1860. Taking place in May 2011, competitors will endure tough racing conditions and soaring temperatures from the very outset. Starting from Melbourne, the racers will ride north through three states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland before crossing the finishing line in Cairns, where the winner will be announced. The race has been split into 17 race days encompassing road, dirt road and hill stages. Riders will need to complete an average of 188 kilometres a day to be in with a chance of winning the £5,000 cash prize. Mike Laird, who developed the race, is a seasoned explorer and participated in the BBC’s Castaway 2000 program alongside Ben Fogle.
