How often do you have a dream hairstyle in mind and leave a salon with something totally different? Northamptonshire boasts fine salons and it is only lack of communication between you and your hairdresser that can avoid hair horrors
R Magazine caught up with leading hairdressers, Hensmans and asked Artistic Director Gemma Hensman who explained “Talk to us, please; explain about your lifestyle, how long you spend on your hair everyday and how you like to wear it. Bring a picture, you may feel like a complete fool taking in a piccy of Lady Gaga or Alexa Chung and saying “I want to look like that” but we will appreciate the visual. Just remember to be realistic, you may have the same style but that doesn’t mean you are going to become a Jennifer clone!”

Have your own ideas but be prepared to be flexible and accept suggestions.
If you are considering having a serious amount of length off your hair do it in stages.
The first cut should leave your hair long enough to tie up. Then if you are still happy with going shorter, go back for a second appointment and have the final style.

Having all your hair chopped off in one go can be very stressful and you could end up blaming your stylist when it’s not really their fault.

happy, remain calm, and remember you do not want to come across as criticising them.

Be a good client, if you turn up late and then insist on answering your mobile every 5 minutes you put your stylist under unnecessary pressure and that’s not going to help your fantastic new style!

RELAX – this is the most vital tip for a successful salon visit. Take the drink they offer you, enjoy an extra treatment or head massage with your appointment. It will help you to unwind and view the appointment positively.
Gossip! But make it hair related. The best way to get to know whether you are both thinking on the same lines or not, is to chat about what you like on other people. Whether it’s by looking through magazines at pictures of Posh and Madonna, or mutual acquaintances, pass on your ideas of what’s hot and what’s decidedly not, and swap ideas on whether it’s a look that would suit you or not, and why.

Dig out your photo albums and flash those snaps. Give your hairdresser an insight into the looks you’ve had in the past. It may provide a few laughs, but it helps to talk over what looks you’ve liked or disliked in the past and why.
Use your hairdresser as a style expert. Your hairdresser is passionate about fashion – after all, hair is now the most important fashion accessory, and so they will also be clued up on current trends, catwalk looks and how that relates to what’s happening on a high street near you.
• Be open-minded. Encourage your
hairdresser to make suggestions on new looks for you. Have confidence in them. Remember to keep things fresh, you don’t have to change your hairdresser, just let them change you.
