Alleged Intoxicated Driver Strikes Utility Pole on Route 28
by Andrea Ganley-Dannewitz A police officer who noticed and attempted to stop a vehicle
operating extremely erratically on Route 28 Wednesday morning witnessed the driver striking a utility pole at the intersection of Route 28 and Pattee Road, splitting the pole in half. Police say that at 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning, an officer was
traveling northbound on South Broadway on routine patrol. The officer observed a vehicle ahead of him also traveling northbound beginning to drift in and out of the left travel lane. The vehicle then moved into the center turn lane without a directional signal, and the vehicle did not slow down to take a left turn. According to Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten, the officer began to try to catch up with the vehicle while it drifted into the southbound lane of traffic. Patten said the officer then activated his emergency lights and siren attempting to alert the driver. The vehicle continued across the travel lanes of Route 28 and collided
with a utility pole in the southbound lane at the intersection of Pattee Road and South Broadway. “The officer made contact with the driver and requested dispatch to contact the fire department for an ambulance, as well as National Grid for the utility pole. The officer made contact with the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver was transported to Parkland Medical Center in Derry for non- life threatening injuries. While the officer was interacting with the driver, identified as Jeffrey Beaulieu, 26, of Salem, the officer observed indications of impairment, but no odor of alcohol,” Patten said. At Parkland Medical Center, a blood draw was performed on Beaulieu to test for intoxicating substances. The results are pending at the state lab. Charges are pending the results of the blood test.

Compared to the 51 burglaries Salem police dealt with in 2009, there has been a vast increase so far in 2010. Salem police currently have over 56 burglaries under investigation, and the number continues to rise. All of these burglaries have occurred in broad daylight and the suspects appear to move very quickly with what they do—sometimes being in and out of a home in less than 10 to 15 minutes. Items taken include electronics, cash, jewelry, and items of value. “All the local departments are getting inundated with burglaries,” said Salem Police Deputy Chief Shawn Patten. He said at the end of September that there had already been 56 burglaries reported, including four reported in the past week and a half. Patten says his department has taken additional steps to deal with the problem and catch those who are responsible for these crimes. He also says it takes additional assistance from the community as well. “Typically, these cases can be tough to solve, unless we catch a burglary in progress. One important thing residents do need to know is many of these burglars are fishing the neighborhoods, knocking on doors to see if anyone is home; if no one is home, they go around back and break in. Those who are home find a person they do not know at their door who either asks for someone who doesn’t live there or asks for directions. We need residents who see or experience something like this to get a description of the person, a description of the vehicle, and a license plate number, then call the police with the best information they can provide. Residents who see an unknown vehicle or person at a neighbor’s home need to make that call as well,” Deputy Chief Patten said. Patten also said that physical evidence has been collected from the sites of many of these burglaries, but without a suspect to match it to, it makes for a tougher type of case to solve. The best precautions to take are reporting suspicious persons
and vehicles in their neighborhoods, keeping an eye on neighbor’s homes, securing all doors and windows with locks, not leaving ladders around for burglars to use, and also clearing overgrown brush and bushes from around the residence so as not to provide a hiding spot for a potential burglar.
In Pelham, police are investigating 41 burglaries thus far into 2010, along with 10 burglary attempts. In 2009, Pelham had 37 burglaries and 11 attempted burglaries, according to Pelham Police Lieutenant Gary Fisher. However, last Tuesday, Pelham police responded to three burglaries. “It’s a high number for one day,” Fisher said. Those three burglaries last Tuesday were close to the Salem town line, and it could be possible they are related to the burglaries that occurred in the area of Brady Avenue last week. “Anything is possible,” Fisher said. “The burglaries in Pelham we responded to were just over the town line from Salem, so it could be a possibility that the same suspects are working in both towns and the surrounding ones as well,” Fisher added. “It could be the downward economy, but I do believe a lot of it is drug-related. If they [the unknown suspects] are unemployed and don’t have money for drugs, they are going to get the money somehow,” Fisher said. Fisher says having good relationships with your neighbors helps more than anything else. A person tends to notice when things are out of place or when a strange vehicle is in the neighborhood, near a neighbor’s home, or in their driveway. Police from both Salem and Pelham urge residents to call police anytime they see something suspicious. “It’s surprising the number of times a neighborhood is surveyed
by officers after a burglary and a neighbor realizes they saw a vehicle in the area or a person not known to them on foot or that something didn’t seem right, yet they hesitated to call police. Those who are doubting themselves on whether to call or not need to make the call. That’s what we are here for—to go check out situations like this,” Fisher said. Other bordering towns have perhaps not been affected so
severely, while some towns have had a much higher number of burglaries than what has occurred in Salem or Pelham. In Derry, police there report between 175 to 180 burglaries
this year – 50 percent up from last year and years before – while Windham reports 30 burglaries, which is reported to be in line with or just slightly higher last year. All residents need to be vigilant and report any suspicious
activity to their local law enforcement agencies. If something doesn’t seem right, just make that call.
